1098-T Form Information for Weber State Students
Weber State University students receive an IRS Form 1098-T from the university that shows how much they paid in qualified tuition and fees. The form lists the amount of education benefits that could be claimed on a student’s tax return.
Students with active enrollment or those making payments on education expenses will receive a 1098-T form.
An eligible educational institution, such as a college or university in which you are enrolled, and an insurer who makes reimbursements or refunds of qualified tuition and related expenses to you, must furnish a 1098-T statement to you.
The amount reported on the 1098-T may not be the amount you would report on your tax return. It is the responsibility of each taxpayer to determine eligibility for educational tax benefits and how to calculate them.
The information on this page is not intended as legal or tax advice. Individuals should contact a tax advisor or consult the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website for more information concerning tax issues and benefits. Weber State University cannot provide tax advice.
Electronic 1098-T
Weber State students can view and print their IRS Form 1098-T though the eWeber portal.
Federal regulation allows those eligible to receive IRS Form 1098-T the option to get the form electronically instead of through physical mail.
To receive an electronic IRS 1098-T, you must select "Yes" on the electronic IRS 1098-T link in eWeber. This choice is made when the personal information is updated each year.
Students that choose to receive an electronic 1098-T can find it in their eWeber portal at the end of January each year. The information on the 1098-T is only informational. You must rely on your receipts to determine the amount you paid out of pocket for calculating your education tax credit.
Students that select "No" should expect their 1098-T form to be mailed the last week of January.
Once you provide consent to get an electronic 1098-T, WSU will not mail Form 1098-T to your home, but will send a Wildcat email to you notifying you that your form is available to view online.
How to View Your 1098-T
- Go to the “View - Pay Tuition and Fees app” in the eWeber portal. The “View - Pay Tuition and Fees app” can also be accessed by clicking on “Tuition and Fees” in the “Categories” menu.
- Select "View IRS Form 1098T-TAX CREDIT FORM.” You may be asked to select the year. If so, select the current year.
If You Can’t View Your 1098-T
Here are a few reasons why you might not find your form, or find a message that states that you are excluded from reporting:
- Before 2018, WSU was only required to provide you with the information if the amount you were billed (not paid) in 2018 was more than the scholarships and financial aid you received.
- Beginning in tax year 2018, your 1098-T form reported Payments Received. Consult your tax professional for information on how to report this information on your tax return.
- Your tuition and fees may be billed in a year before attending the classes. For example, tuition and fees may have been billed in 2023 for spring 2024 courses, and that information would have been reported on your 2023 Form 1098-T.
You are responsible for reporting the actual amount paid in qualified education expenses to the IRS.
Payment detail information is available from the Student Account Suite in eWeber. Go to Current Activity and Semester Activity to see payment dates for the current academic year.
If you would like assistance determining the amount paid, please use your Wildcat email and send a message to taxcredit@weber.edu.
Withdrawal of Consent
You may withdraw consent to receive an IRS 1098-T form electronically at any time before Jan. 10 by changing your elections to "No" using the same process you would use to receive the form electronically.
Request for Paper Statement
If you chose to receive the 1098-T form electronically and you also want to request a paper copy, email the request to taxcredit@weber.edu using your Wildcat email address.
1098-T Form Details
You, or the person who can claim you as a dependent, may be able to claim an education credit on Form 1040 for the qualified tuition and related expenses that were actually paid each tax year. Prior to 2018, institutions may report either payments received in Box 1 or amounts billed in Box 2 of the form.
The amount shown in Box 1 or Box 2 may represent an amount other than the amount actually paid in the most recent tax year. Your institution must include its name, address, and information contact telephone number on this statement. It may also include contact information for a service provider. Although the service provider may be able to answer certain questions about the statement, do not contact them or the filer for explanations of the requirements for (and how to figure) any education credit that you may claim.
Beginning in the 2019 tax year, Weber State University reports adjustments to payments made for a prior year in Box 4. This includes reimbursements or refunds of qualified tuition and related expenses made in the current tax year that relate to payments received that were reported for any prior year after 2002.
The 1098-T form for the current tax year will also have a blank value in Box 3. In 2018, this contained a checkbox for Change of Reporting Method. Beginning in tax year 2018, WSU started reporting payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses, and no longer reports amounts billed for qualified tuition and fees. Before the 2018 tax year, WSU reported reductions in charges billed for qualified tuition and related expenses.
