Alternative Spring Break  03/02/2011
Traditionally, Spring Break has been regarded as a week in which college students are free to run wild, disregard authority, and more or less throw away their time. However, there are many other options available for students opting to change this downtrodden image of Spring Break. Weber State University offers a fantastic program known as Alternative Spring Break. In this program, students embark on a journey to a different area of the U.S. and partner up with Habitat for Humanity and other service-oriented organizations, offering their time and efforts to outlying communities.

Dancing for the Environment  02/25/2011
Weber State University hosted the Repertory Dance Theater in collaboration with the WSU Moving Company this week. They have been performing for local schools as well as the community at WSU's Browning Center, in order to educate on issues and topics in the environment, as well as the Green Map Project.

Spanish Club Presents  02/25/2011
The Weber State University Spanish Club and the Guatemalan Humanitarian Project will be holding a series of four concerts to raise money for their efforts to help build a cultural center to promote literacy, as well as raise money to provide micro-credit loans.

Rotary Donation Supports Overseas Outreach Project  2/15/2011
Thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club of Ogden and the Ogden Rotary Foundation, 11 computer science students at Weber State University are traveling to Ghana in March for an extended spring break. In the process, they hope to improve the efficiency of medical care in that nation.

WSU to Help "Give Kids a Smile"  2/16/2011
Weber State University’s Dental Hygiene Clinic and local dental professionals are working together to fight dental disease in children from low-income families, a problem the U.S. Surgeon General calls a “silent epidemic.” Free dental services will be provided to children in need on Feb. 26, and that’s reason to smile.

WSU Plans Engineering Day  2/11/2011
“Parent-Daughter Engineering Day” will be held on Feb. 26 at 9 a.m. in the Hurst Center for Lifelong Learning at Weber State University. The day is designed to spark the interest of 40 middle school-age girls and get them thinking like engineers. 

Wildcats to the Capitol  2/10/2011
It was a "Day at the Capitol" for Weber State University students participating in the undergraduate research program. The students displayed posters of their research projects in the Rotunda of the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City on Thursday morning. There were 22 research projects on display, including an in-depth study of ethics in the state government and the effectiveness of home filtration systems on drinking water.

Blood Battle Starts at Davis  2/02/2011
The American Red Cross and Weber State University combined forces on Monday to save lives. Students at the Davis campus agreed that joining the "Blood Battle" was worth the fight.

An ambulance sat outside the Shepherd Union Building on Saturday with its lights blaring and a sign that read "Ghana or Bust." The lights signaled entrance to a benefit concert that would help pay for the new ambulance.

Wildcats Serve the Community  01/24/2011
Students gathered together by the Weber State University Clubs and Organizations got "down and dirty" to provide clean clothes, clean beds and food to the homeless of Ogden. This past Saturday, dozens of students took time out of their weekend to volunteer at St. Anne's Center in Ogden from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The volunteers were very appreciated by the staff of the center, which relies on donations. Different organizations came together to volunteer in different ways. Students expressed their pride in knowing that they helped the poor of the Ogden area.

Renovations Coming to Local Nursery  10/21/2010
When Josh Whitesides visited the nursery at Ogden's Salvation Army, his eyes caught sight of the chipping paint, cracked walls, old carpet, water-stained ceiling, worn-out furniture and outdated toys, and through all of this he saw a chance for Weber State University students to volunteer and make a difference in the community.

With instructions in hand, Alex Grimes presses the "print" option on the touch screen of the voting machine he just assembled. Grimes, a computer science major, is training to be a poll manager in Hooper, Utah, and will be one of the youngest poll workers on Election Day 2010.

The to-do list is long – fix the ceiling, hang new drywall, paint, lay new carpet, assemble furniture, clean, and re-stock toys and books – but when Weber State University student volunteers finish the project, the nursery at Ogden’s Salvation Army will be as good as new.

Just two miles north and one mile west of Weber State University stands Dee School. Built in May of 1970, the school currently houses 464 students and 23 teachers, but it has no walls.

In association with National Make a Difference Day, Weber State University is launching its first children's book drive. On Oct. 23, gently used books will be collected at WSU's Ogden and Davis campus bookstores.

Weber Walks Laps for Lindsay10/17/2010
When Lyndsay Lynch died last August after a life-long battle with epilepsy, her mother Mandy knew she wanted to continue her goodness. She and her husband Charles, a Weber State University carpenter, were able to take a step in realizing that goal on Saturday, Oct. 16, when community members gathered in behalf of Lyndsay to walk and donate money for other children with epilepsy.

Bikes Send 'round the World  10/08/2010
A student in West Africa can spend as much as four hours walking to and from school each day without adequate nutrition, which is one reason why Bryan Dorsey, a Weber State University geography professor, is hoping people roll to Saturday's bike-a-thon to donate money and bikes for the people of Ghana and Togo.

Every year, residents of the Ogden area go without daily necessities. When the temperature drops, warm clothes are needed more than ever."Because of the economy, we are in desperate need of donations," said Rich Soper, an employee at St. Anne's Center.
Weber State University student leaders are organizing a winter clothing drive. In conjunction with Student Involvement & Leadership, drop-boxes for these winter clothing items will be placed around WSU's Ogden and Davis campuses.

With the struggling economy, it is becoming difficult for students exiting college to get a job. It is a fear that many students foresee and put off because the bite of reality is still far enough away. However, students can make efforts now to help secure a stable future.

Dough for the Hungry  9/17/2010
Weber State University Student Senate members raised $2,500  by fasting from Wednesday morning to Thursday afternoon. WSU Senators filled the Shepherd Union Building Atrium yesterday wearing black and white signs that read "I'm empty so they can be full." The senators went without food in order to raise awareness and money for Weber Cares, a program created to help feed less fortunate students on campus.

A Concert for Adrian Maxson  09/12/10
When Mark Maxson began the Adrian Maxson Benefit Concert, he admitted that a part of him did it to get past the one-year anniversary of his son's death. Friday night revisited that milestone for the Weber State University professor as he held the second benefit concert, pulling together students and faculty of the Performing Arts Department for an eclectic mix of music.

The Community Involvement Center at Weber State University hosted an inaugural Service Symposium last Friday by showcasing poster presentations for 20 community-based, service-learning and faculty-assigned volunteer projects. "Every project and discipline presented here, whether it seems like the most abstract field or the most practical, ultimately gave students a chance to work with and help other people," said Eric Stern, the faculty advisor for one of the showcased projects.

Cats Taste Life in a Homeless Box                 4/03/09
A homemade of cardboard is hardly the American dream, but too many Americans desperate for shelter call a cardboard box home. On Wednesday, April 8, the Weber State University Community Involvement Center is sponsoring a Cardboard Campout to raise awareness and build support for the homeless community of Ogden.

Alternative Spring Break                                1/23/09
From the onset of the spring semester, students eagerly await spring break. Some travel to exotic locations with even warmer climates, donning flip-flops and sun tan lotion, while others are content to stay up late, party, watch movies or simply sleep in - sometimes doing all of the above.

Weber State University was recently recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for its outstanding history of community involvement and outreach. The foundation honored WSU in the category of Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships.

Angel Tree Helps Families in Need                        12/01/08
"I gave a family a ride home one day that had come to pick up their packages, and, as we drove, I looked in the rearview mirror, and saw the 7 year old girl hugging and loving a doll she pulled out of the box. To me, that picture will always tell me why we do the program, because some little girl, somewhere, is going to want a doll, and that will be her cherished possession.
