Overview
The Mentors for Utah Scholars program provides academic support to junior high students with math, English, and science homework during the YMCA after-school program at Mount Ogden Junior High. The program’s target population has primarily been students who are first-generation, non-traditionally college bound.
The after-school program is structured around academics and health. The junior high students start the program with a healthy snack and an hour of tutoring which is followed by various clubs. WSU students have been an essential part of the after-school program, so much so that many WSU students have created their own clubs that range from art, culture, Utah Scholars/ career exploration, and science.

What is Utah Scholars?
Utah Scholars is a core, 9-12 grade college-preparatory curriculum that the state of Utah asks school districts to take part in. The curriculum consists of four additional classes in conjunction with the state’s high school graduation requirements. Other requirements consist of maintaining an overall 3.0 GPA, and obtaining a minimum of a “C” grade in the outlined curriculum classes. If junior high and high school students follow the requirements they are eligible for scholarships and college funding by the Board of Regents.
