AliciaAlicia

Alicia Giralt has been a professor of Spanish in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures for 9 years. Her goal is to help students become life-long learners who know how to communicate with, appreciate, and respect the cultures of the Hispanic people in search of personal growth and fulfilling jobs. Alicia’s desire is to help students be better citizens by becoming involved in the community, putting into practice what they learn in class. Throughout her years at WSU, she has come to realize that adding service-learning components to her teaching will greatly enhance student educational opportunities.
Text Box: Jon Williams Photo “Dr. Giralt is a “true believer” in the benefits of student Civic Engagement, working well with community partners and students alike towards the greater good.”
- Karen Thurber (Development Director - Ogden Weber Applied Technology College)

Dr. Shannon Butler has been at Weber State University for 23 years, and during that time she has been an exemplary service-learning faculty member and colleague. She has been a leader in the grassroots service-learning movement on this campus from the outset and remains active in the establishment of our new Community Involvement Center (CIC) creating valuable learning and leadership opportunities for WSU students. She has received several awards for her excellence in collaboration, and has been key in the curriculum development of several service learning classes and presentations. Her dedication to the civic engagement of WSU students has not only inspired and affected many students, but has provided a model for other faculty to follow.

“Dr. Butler isn’t like other professors; she has a unique teaching style which incorporates connecting to the community through curricular service projects. Her passion regarding community involvement is absolutely contagious!”
- Charity A. Smith (WSU Student)

Utah Campus Compact Annual Awards

The Utah Campus Compact recognizes outstanding service on the part of faculty members, students, and community partners in the spring semester of each year.

The Utah Campus Compact is an organization that promotes service among students from the 13 institutions of higher education in Utah. Each year, the UCC recognizes the outstanding work of faculty, students, and community partners with three distinct awards: Service-Learning Engaged Scholarship (faculty), Civically Engaged Student, and Committed Community Partner. We are pleased to spotlight this year’s recipients.

Billy Rutter - Civically Engaged Student

Billy Rutter is a senior at WSU and is currently preparing for medical school. The leadership he has provided for the WSU chapter of Habitat for Humanity has been remarkable. His work with Habitat has not only exceeded all expectations but has brought awareness to the issue of homelessness for our community. His membership in the AmeriCorps program has also demonstrated sincere commitment to serving the community. Additionally, he has mentored junior high and elementary school students, been involved in several community-based projects, prepared supplies to be shipped to third world countries, worked with the elderly, and organized blood drives.

Karen Thurber - Committed Community Partner

Karen Thurber’s breadth and depth of commitment connecting WSU to Ogden City has been remarkable over the last seven years. Her knowledge of Ogden’s community organization and their needs has helped facilitate the civic engagement of over 30 projects. Additionally, she has been the Manager of Services for Homeless Families at Your Community Connection, Development Director of Ogden Weber Applied Technology College, and Senior Project Coordinator for Ogden City Community and Economic Development where she managed the 10 year Enterprise Community Initiative, School to Work Program, Operation Weed and Seed, HUD Consolidated Planning Process, Fair Housing and Sustainable Ogden Initiative.

Victoria Ramirez - Service-Learning Engaged Scholarship

Victoria Ramirez’s commitment to service-learning has not come overnight. Through years of research, and encouragement from dedicated Weber State University faculty, Victoria came to understand the powerful impact civic engagement had on the learning experience. As a Composition professor, she faced the challenge of how to implement the service-learning pedagogy into her courses. Victoria developed a course workbook to accompany the main text, which engages students in the area of poverty. With a focus on poverty, her students began working with Boys and Girls Club, Youth Impact, and public school tutoring programs. Students attest to the impact, both cognitively and emotionally, service projects have on them. They are taken out of their comfort zones, faced with situations somewhat foreign to them, yet learn the value of serving others.
