Undergraduate Research

Receive credit for a course-based research experience (CRE attribute) course for research-based experience. The time commitment is typically one semester but may vary depending on the course. For Wildcat Advantage credit, you can complete this activity up to three times (but only once per level). However, we encourage you to take advantage of various HIEEs at Weber State!

• Who can register for CRE courses?

  Any undergraduate student can take a CRE course, although prerequisites may exist and need to be satisfied to enroll. Course prerequisites can be found in the catalog for the specific CRE course you are interested in, or you can contact the respective department for more information.

• How do I participate in this HIEE?

  Sign up for a course with the CRE attribute. You can obtain a complete list of courses available each semester by searching “CRE” in the catalog or by emailing Erin Kendall at erinkendall@weber.edu.

• What information must I verify in GivePulse?

  In GivePulse, you can enter information about your course: course number, the instructor’s name, a summary of your research question/project and whether or not you received course credit.

• What should I include in my ePortfolio?

  Reflect on your research experience, which skills you developed and how this experience will propel you forward. You should also include your CRE dissemination product in your ePortfolio. This will summarize your research question, methods and results. Typically, this will be a written paper, poster presentation, video, creative work or a PowerPoint/oral presentation.

Complete and disseminate a research, creative or scholarly project with a faculty mentor. If you’re an undergraduate student, you’re eligible to participate. You can even complete more than one research project, but we encourage you to take advantage of various HIEEs at Weber State!

• What is the time commitment?

  You should discuss the time commitment with your faculty mentor, as projects can be demanding and disseminating your work at conferences can be expensive. The research project typically requires one or two full semesters but may vary by project.

  • For Publication

    Writing a work for publication can be time intensive and involves several drafts between the student and faculty mentor. The process can take one month to over a year, depending on the project and journal you submit to.

  • For Conference Dissemination

    Disseminating your work typically involves a short presentation or performance. This is often done at a local or national conference. Although presentations and performances are relatively brief, they typically showcase many months to years of your research.

• How do I participate in this HIEE?

  If you want to present or publish your work, talk to your faculty mentor about this option. Directions for writing and submitting publications can be found on individual journal websites.

• What information must I verify in GivePulse?

  In GivePulse, enter information about your project: the project title, mentor’s name, if you applied and/or received an Undergraduate Research Grant and a summary of your research. For the dissemination portion, you must include whether you were published or presented at a conference.

  • For Publication

    Include the publication’s title, authors, journal title, edition, pages and a DOI for your paper (if eligible).

  • For Conference Dissemination

    Information about disseminating your research/scholarly/creative work, including the conference name, conference dates, conference location, your mentor’s name, your project title and whether you received an Undergraduate Research Travel Grant.

• What should I include in my ePortfolio?

  In your ePortfolio, reflect on your research experience, which skills you developed and how this experience helps you advance academically. You should also include evidence of your research dissemination.

  • For Publication

    If you have been published, include your publication in your ePortfolio. Summarize your major accomplishment and the new information you found and shared within your field.

  • For Conference Dissemination

    Try to include something to showcase the dissemination of your work, such as a copy of your poster, PowerPoint presentation, research/scholarly paper or creative work.

• Dissemination Resources

  To complete your project, disseminate your research, scholarly or creative work at a discipline-specific/professional conference, National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), Utah Conference on Undergraduate Research (UCUR), the Research and Engagement Symposium or be published in a scholarly journal.
