What is Canvas Commons?

It’s a platform for sharing course content in the Canvas learning management system. Instructors can share a range of learning objects including modules, quizzes, assignments, and entire courses. This platform is used for sharing resources for WSU academic courses. You may be asked to remove content if it doesn't relate to academics.

Commons Guidelines

Before sharing content to Canvas Commons, consider these guidelines. If you have questions about whether your content meets the guidelines, please email instructionaldesign@weber.edu.

• Sharing Content

  You have options when it comes to sharing your content.

  WSU: Everyone at WSU with access to WSU’s Canvas instance can access the content

  Consortium: Everyone at WSU with access to WSU’s Canvas instance can access the content but the content is grouped, typically by college, for easier filtering

  Private: Used for sharing your own materials among your own courses. For example, you can add a module of instruction to Commons and then send it to several of your own courses without having to use the course import process.

• Keep Copyright in Mind

  When sharing widely to Commons, opt for original content that you created. You can share your assignments, instructional materials such as files and Canvas pages, quiz questions, modules, or even entire courses.

  You are able to share materials that include copyrighted material ONLY IF you have permission from the copyright holder.

  This includes work that you may have created collaboratively with one or more people.

  Also consider these before sharing:

  • Excerpts from texts or articles - if you wrote it but a publisher owns the copyright, you’ll need to request permission before sharing widely
  • Photos, data, or images created by other people used in your course pages
• Creative Commons Content

  If you choose to share content that was shared via Creative Commons, be sure you meet the requirements of the terms for that specific license.

• Retaining Copyright on Your Work

  When sharing to Commons, you can choose to share content under any definition of the Creative Commons licenses.

  Weber State University also outlines course content copyright policies in its Policies and Procedures Manual so be sure to follow all posted guidelines before sharing.

• Reporting Copyright Violations Found in Canvas Commons

  If you find any questionable or blatant copyright infringements shared to Canvas Commons, please contact us right away at LMSadmin@weber.edu. Please include screenshots if possible.

• Sharing Content and Student Data

  Commons only allows you to share instructional content. No student data can be shared. This includes discussion responses, conversations, or attendance information.
