Clinical Instructor Resources
Clinical instructors (CI) are an important part of students’ experience in any Weber State University radiologic sciences program.
If after reading the information on this page, you have any questions, email elizahill3@weber.edu with questions.
CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR BENEFITS
CIs have access to lots of benefits while working in conjunction with Weber State’s radiologic sciences program. These are available in the Welcome Packet that’s emailed to you.
More information about these benefits is available by contacting elizahill3@weber.edu.
Tuition Benefits
CIs can get up to 6 credit hours free per semester if they meet requirements spelled out in PPM 3-42a.
If you are going to take WSU courses, the Clinical Faculty Log (PDF) must be filled out and emailed to elizahill3@weber.edu at least three weeks before the start of the semester.

The CI assists the Clinical Coordinator in the supervision and clinical educational process of the students.
The Clinical Coordinator and CI are responsible for evaluating students’ competency levels and completing the evaluation instruments. The students should be under direct supervision for the first 50% of the educational experience, or until they have demonstrated competency in performing specific examinations.

Student Schedules
CIs will create and manage a student schedule with the student.
Students should not be scheduled during their scheduled university class dates and times, including lab dates and times.
Schedules can be flexible and include some night and weekend shifts.
Schedules should not exceed more than 10 hours per day or 40 hours per week.
Weekend work cannot exceed 2 weekend shifts per calendar month (partial shifts count as a full calendar day).Night shifts cannot exceed 6 per calendar week.
A Varied Clinical Hours Form must be submitted by the student to the School of Radiologic Sciences for any hours completed on a university holiday or break, or for any hours above 24 hours per week.
-
Clinical Logbook
Students will have an electronic copy of their clinical logbook available in their Canvas class.
Students should manage their own logbook requirements, but will need your assistance with providing evaluations, competencies, verification of documentation, etc.
CIs should expect to complete a mid-semester and an end-of-semester evaluation each semester and will need to provide signatures verifying completion of clinical hours.

Competencies
Certification and Logbook Requirements: Each certification agency requires a specific type and number of competencies and repetitions. Refer to the student logbooks for the exact schedule of competencies to be completed each semester. Additionally, students may need to submit repetitions directly to the credentialing agency's portal (e.g., ARRT), with verification usually sent via email.
Signoffs and Signatures: Every signature must come from a certified technologist in that specific area of expertise. While any qualified technologist can sign off on a competency, the CI has the final authority to ensure consistency. CIs are encouraged to work with their team to figure out the best approach for accomplishing these requirements.
Supervision and Ongoing Learning: Granting a competency does not mean the student has flawless expertise. Students must continue to be supervised by the CI and/or other technologists even after signoff.
Quality Assurance (QA): CIs should regularly perform QA reviews of images alongside students to support their learning and technical growth.
Support and Escalation: If any issues or concerns arise regarding a student meeting their required competencies, CIs should reach out to their university contact for assistance.

Professionalism
CIs are the best examples for students. Please remain professional at all times with the students, especially in front of patients.
Demonstrate and share your expertise with the students.
Provide the students with respectful critiques of their images and performance.
Please show patience with the students and be the example of creating a positive and welcoming learning environment for the students.
Students should be scanning on actual patients as much as possible. Please provide them with these opportunities as much as possible.
Students also need to learn from the exams you are doing with them. As often as allowable, please provide appropriate opportunities for them to ask questions about images or pathologies encountered during exams performed.
As best you can, please remember you are training your future coworkers. We expect them to engage and work hard, and know they will learn the most from you and your teams and the expertise and examples that you show them.
