Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Radiography

The Associate of Applied Science in Radiography is the starting point for any student interested in pursuing a profession in radiologic sciences.

Students can earn their degree through this hybrid program in five semesters, and participate in clinical education at a Weber State University-affiliated health care facility.

Radiography graduates will be prepared to work as a radiologic technologist or radiographer in a hospital, clinic, physician’s office, operate an industrial x-ray, or pursue a bachelor’s degree in radiologic sciences.

Radiologic technologists and radiographers use radiation (x-rays) to produce images of anatomy to perform diagnostic imaging examinations and administer radiation therapy treatments. X-rays can be used to detect bone fractures, find foreign objects in the body and demonstrate the relationship between bone and soft tissue.

Graduates can also take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) national certification exam.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

Associate of Applied Science in Radiography (AAS)

Students are required to complete 57 credit hours of radiologic sciences classes throughout four continuous semesters in the radiography program.

General Education Requirements

In addition to all radiography degree requirements, all WSU academic requirements for an associate’s degree must be met, including 27 credits of General Education, in order to earn the radiography degree.

PREREQUISITE REQUIREMENTS

The following academic class requirements must be met before applying to our radiography programs. Some programs may have additional or fewer prerequisites, which are noted.

  • Science Prerequisites

    Students must complete one of the following two sets of science courses before applying. Classes can be completed at WSU or another accredited institution. The WSU Transfer website has more information about course equivalencies and transferring credits.

    Science Option 1

    • ZOOL 2320: Human Anatomy (4 credits)
    • ZOOL 2420 LS: Human Physiology (4)

    Science Option 2

    • HTHS 2110 LS: Integrated Human Anatomy and Physiology I (4)
    • HTHS 2111: Integrated Human Anatomy and Physiology II (4)

    If you are enrolled in prerequisite anatomy and physiology classes during the current fall semester, wait until the semester's grades have been posted to your transcript before uploading transcripts and submitting your application.

  • General Education Prerequisites

    Although not required to apply, you will need to complete the following classes before the program starts in the fall semester:

    • ENGL 1010 EN1: Introductory College Writing (3)
    • ENGL 2010 EN2: Intermediate College Writing (3)
    • COMM 1020 HU: Principles of Public Speaking (3), or COMM 2110 HU CEL: Interpersonal and Small Group Communication (3)
    • MATH 1030 QL: Contemporary Mathematics (3), or higher
    • PSY 1010 SS: Introductory Psychology (3)
    • 3 credits of a Physical Sciences (PS) or Life Sciences (LS) course

AVAILABLE PROGRAMS AND LOCATIONS

The radiography program is available through a variety of locations. Students’ placement is based on their physical address.

  • Campus Programs
    • The Ogden Campus program is located at WSU in Ogden, Utah.
    • The Salt Lake Campus program is located in Salt Lake County.
    • The Provo Campus program is located in Utah County.
      • Revere Health in Utah County is part of the Utah Outreach Program.

  • Outreach Programs

    The Utah Outreach, Four Corners Outreach and Wyoming Outreach programs are for students outside the Ogden, Salt Lake City and Provo areas.

    Outreach program locations are:

    • Four Corners Outreach
      • Locations are in southeastern Utah, southwestern Colorado and northwestern New Mexico.
    • Wyoming Outreach

    Montana programs are available for students in Montana, northern Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota.

CLINICAL EDUCATION, CLINICAL SITE INFORMATION

Students are required to complete a clinical education component in order to earn a radiography degree.

As part of this requirement, most students will spend at least three days per week at their clinical site with an average of 24 hours per week of clinical education.

Different programs have different requirements and conditions for clinical site placement.

  • Ogden Campus

    Students are assigned to clinical sites in Weber, Davis, Box Elder and Cache counties.

  • Salt Lake Campus

    Students are assigned to clinical sites in Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties.

  • Provo Campus

    Students are assigned to clinical sites in Utah and Wasatch counties.

  • Utah Outreach

    Students apply to individual clinic sites in rural Utah. Clinical sites are:

    Students secure their own clinical site in Arizona. Applicants to this program must include a letter from the proposed clinical site they plan on learning at, stating that the clinic is willing to take the applicant as a student.

  • Montana Programs

    Students secure their own clinical site in Montana, northern Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota.

    Applicants to this program must include a letter from the proposed clinical site they plan on learning at, stating that the clinic is willing to take the applicant as a student.

COURSEWORK DELIVERY

All programs are taught in a hybrid format combining face-to-face instruction with virtual learning on Zoom.

Some programs have specific requirements for how often they have in-person classes and labs.

Ogden, Salt Lake and Provo Campus Programs

Labs are held three times per semester at WSU in Ogden, Utah.

Utah, Four Corners and Wyoming Outreach Programs

These programs require travel to WSU in Ogden, Utah three times per semester for class and associated labs.

Arizona Programs

Students attend class in Phoenix, Arizona three times per semester.

Montana Programs

Students attend class in Bozeman, Montana approximately once per month.

PROGRAM COSTS

CERTIFICATION

Upon completing the program, students can take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) national certification exam.

Many states require practicing technologists to be licensed, and you may be able to use your ARRT certification to fulfill certain state licensing regulations.

Utah requires practicing radiologic technologists to be licensed.
