Canvas Quizzes Overview

Whether you're using Classic Quizzes or New Quizzes, this page provides essential tips, key differences, and quick access to Canvas guides to help you build and manage assessments in Canvas effectively.

Quick Tips and Highlights

Use Classic Quizzes for Surveys

Classic Quizzes is the simplest way to have graded and ungraded surveys.

Randomize Strategically

Shuffle answers, but avoid shuffling questions if they build on each other contextually.

Secure, Not Perfect

Use time limits and access codes; for remote proctoring, use Honorlock. No setup is fully cheat-proof—set clear expectations.

Clear Expectations

Publish and set availability dates in advance so students don't miss them. Allow multiple attempts with clear feedback.

Tip: You can use both Classic and New Quizzes in the same course!

Online Proctoring

Proctorio is being phased out. It will remain available through the end of Fall 2025 and be removed in December. We recommend transitioning new assessments to Honorlock.

Honorlock is now available in Canvas and is the preferred remote proctoring tool at Weber State. For setup steps, student preparation, and troubleshooting, see the WSU Honorlock FAQs & How-Tos.

Tips: Don’t mix tools—disable Proctorio before using Honorlock.
Provide a practice quiz or direct students to the Honorlock Student Tour and System Check.

If a student requires testing accommodations, coordinate with Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) prior to the exam.

When setting up an Honorlock exam, clearly specify allowed resources (e.g., calculators, notes) in both the Canvas quiz instructions and in Honorlock Student Guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use both quiz types?

Yes! Canvas allows you to use both Classic and New Quizzes within the same course.

Should I switch to New Quizzes?

It depends on your needs. New Quizzes offer more question types and better analytics, but some third-party tools may only work with Classic.

Does Honorlock work with New Quizzes?

Yes. Honorlock supports both Classic and New Quizzes. See the Honorlock FAQs for Canvas steps and student prep.

Can I use Proctorio and Honorlock in the same course?

No. Their extensions conflict. Disable Proctorio before enabling Honorlock, and direct students to install the Honorlock extension.

Do I need to set availability dates?

Yes. Set availability and due dates to ensure students access your quiz during the right timeframe. This is also required for setting an exam up in the campus testing centers.

What happens if a student loses connection?

Canvas autosaves responses. You can moderate attempts to allow additional time or extra attempts as needed.
