RN to BSN Prospective Students

REGISTERED NURSE TO BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (RN to BSN) PROGRAM

Intended for licensed or eligible for licensure registered nurses, our ACEN-accredited Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (RN to BSN) allows students to capitalize on prior education and experience while moving into the professional nurse realm. RN to BSN graduates will be well-prepared for nursing leadership roles and nursing graduate studies programs.

Working nurses can attend the RN to BSN Program in a flexible and online setting to further their education. It’s tailored for the working nurse and allows students to complete the program through an accelerated (2 semesters), traditional (3 semesters), or part-time (up to 9 semesters) program of study. Throughout the program, students will broaden their understanding of the healthcare system with courses on population health, healthcare policy, care coordination, evidence-based practice, and leadership. Students may utilize RN to BSN upper-division elective credits to complete necessary prerequisites or prepare for future nursing graduate studies programs.

Prospective students without RN licensure or who are not eligible for licensure should visit the Department of Associate Degree in Nursing to learn more about becoming a registered nurse.

ELIGIBILITY & PREREQUISITES

• Licensure

  Prospective students must possess an active and unrestricted RN license in the State of Utah or be eligible to take the NCLEX before (or during) the first semester of the RN to BSN Program.

  • Students who do not pass the NCLEX by the end of the first semester will need to withdraw until they pass to progress in the program.

• Degree Requirements

  Prospective students must have completed an Associate of Science (AS) or an Applied Associate of Science (AAS) in nursing from an accredited nursing program. The nursing program must also be at a regionally accredited college or university (both are required).

  • In some cases, students from non-regionally accredited colleges or universities who meet the GPA and prerequisite requirements may be eligible. Contact an advisor for more information.

• GPA

  Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (from regionally accredited institutions only).

  • RNs with two or more years of documented full-time work experience (or 3 years of part-time work experience) may apply if their Cumulative GPA is 2.5 or higher and their Nursing GPA is 3.0 or higher from all nursing courses.

• Prerequisite Courses

  Prospective students can find prerequisite information in the WSU Catalog.

  • Prospective students are strongly encouraged to verify that they have completed all prerequisites before applying to the RN to BSN Program. To ensure completion, contact the Department of Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Advisor & Enrollment Specialist (see: preadmission advising on this page) before applying.
    • For the review to be complete, a potential applicant must be admitted to Weber State University and have all official transcripts sent to WSU Admissions for official review.
  • Although not a prerequisite, all WSU university core and breadth requirements will be required to graduate from the RN to BSN Program.
    • Prospective students should know that the program will take longer than 2 semesters if applicants are missing these additional graduation requirements. A preadmission advising appointment is strongly recommended (see: preadmission advising on this page).

• International Student Requirements

  Due to changes by the U.S. Government on the post-COVID SEVP rule, non-immigrant students seeking a student visa will need additional non-nursing courses to participate in the RN to BSN Program.

  • The federal requirement calls for 9 hours of face-to-face credits per semester. Since the RN to BSN Program is strictly online, an international student must add nine credits (but no more) of face-to-face courses per semester to their RN to BSN online courses. In most cases, this will add one or two semesters (at a minimum) and additional coursework (which increases cost) to the RN to BSN Program.

  WSU is an open-enrollment university, and you can apply to Weber State anytime. Don't forget, once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat. If you've previously taken a WSU course (including high school concurrent enrollment), visit Return to Weber for more information.

  • RN to BSN Program prospective students will need to apply to WSU or be a current matriculated student at WSU.
  • Transfer students should send their official transcripts to the admissions office for review.

• 3 - Selection Process

  A competitive point application process occurs when more community applicants apply than positions available. Acceptance is dependent on availability.

  Criteria used in the point selection process include:

  • Cumulative GPA
  • Completion of Science GPA
    • HTHS 1110 & HTHS 1111 (or equivalent) & Chemistry 1130 or 1050/1110
  • AS Degree or higher (not AAS), completed and posted by the application deadline from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Completion of Pathophysiology 2230, Microbiology 1113 & Nutrition 1020 course(s)
  • Years of work experience as an RN
  • Veteran status
  • Application submission by the early application
  • Alternate status
  • Re-applicant status (no more than 1 point available)
  • Service as a preceptor for the Department of Associate Degree in Nursing ADN Program in the last year
  • Former Annie Taylor Dee School of Nursing AS degree graduates will be given extra points in the selection process.

• 4 - Notification

  The Department of Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing will notify prospective students of acceptance or declination status approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the appropriate application deadline.
