NEW Intermountain Engineering, Technology, and Computing (i-ETC) Conference 2026.
The i-ETC 2026 Conference will be held May 8–9, 2026, in person at Brigham Young University. This annual conference is organized in collaboration with local and regional universities Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, Utah State University, Weber State University, Idaho State University, Montana State University, and regional technology industry partners along the Silicon Slopes. The IEEE is the technical sponsor.

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT): Summer Internship
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site at RIT is inviting applications for summer 2026. In our program, undergraduate students will experience research and other career-enhancing activities in an interdisciplinary environment with special focus on Computational Sensing for Human-centered AI (Generative AI focus).
The REU students will receive a stipend of up to $6300, up to $700 for travel, and up to $1125 for meals. They will also be housed on RIT’s campus.

Overview
The Part-Time Construction Assistant Estimator/Intern supports the estimating team by
performing quantity takeoffs, organizing bid documents, and assisting with subcontractor
outreach. This role is ideal for someone early in their estimating career or transitioning into
pre-construction work, with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage tasks efficiently
within a part-time schedule.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating Support
Assist in reviewing drawings, specifications, and project documents to understand project
scope.
• Perform basic quantity takeoffs for materials, labor, and equipment.
• Help prepare preliminary and detailed cost estimates under the guidance of a lead estimator.
• Support the development of bid summaries, cost breakdowns, and pricing sheets.
• Review and verify incoming bid requests.
Bid Preparation
• Organize bid documents, addenda, and project files.
• Track bid deadlines and ensure all required documents are prepared on time.
• Assist in assembling bid packages and proposal submissions.
Subcontractor & Vendor Coordination
• Distribute bid invitations and follow up with subcontractors and suppliers.
• Collect and organize quotes for review by the lead estimator.
• Maintain and update subcontractor/vendor contact lists.
Documentation & Reporting
• Maintain accurate estimate logs, cost histories, and project records.
• Assist with updating internal cost databases and historical pricing information
• Prepare comparison spreadsheets and basic value-engineering options.
Collaboration & Administrative Support
• Work closely with estimators, project managers, and field staff to clarify scope and assumptions.
• Participate in pre-bid meetings and occasional site visits as needed.
• Provide general administrative support to the estimating and pre-construction teams.
Qualifications
• Some experience or education in construction, estimating, engineering, or related fields.
• Ability to read and interpret basic construction drawings and specifications.
• Familiarity with estimating tools (Bluebeam, Excel, or similar) is a plus.
• Strong math, analytical, and organizational skills.
• Excellent communication and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently within a part-time schedule.
Typical Schedule
• 10–20 hours per week, depending on bid cycles and workload.
• Flexible mix of office and site work (occasional site visits).

1. Job Purpose:
The mechanical engineering intern position will provide support to the SER organization
by assisting with equipment inspections, reliability engineering tasks, maintenance
planning, and small scale design or optimization projects. Working under the guidance of
experienced engineers, the intern will gain hands-on exposure to refinery processes,
rotating and static equipment, safety standards, and project execution in a heavy
industrial environment.
2. Principal Accountabilities:
Support the mechanical integrity, safety and environmental efforts within SER.
Conduct field inspections and collect equipment performance data.
Help develop engineering calculations, technical reports, and repair procedures.
Review and update mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and equipment documentation.
Assist with mechanical design tasks for small capital or maintenance projects
(e.g., piping supports, equipment upgrades, materials selection).
Follow all refinery safety policies and participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings,
and required training.
3. Key Challenges:
Drawing on their engineering coursework thus far in their education career, the
candidate will be tasked with assignments geared towards helping them gain real-world
experience with refinery equipment and mechanical systems. These assignments will
foster skills in troubleshooting, data analysis, technical reporting, and field engineering.
This role will also give exposure to working in a high-hazard industrial environment. On a
prioritized basis this role will support the various mechanical engineering efforts at SER’s
Woods Cross, UT and Evanston, WY sites. This role includes both office and field work
activities.
4. Critical Skills and Complexity:
Unique Knowledge & Experience:
Currently pursuing a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
Completed junior year level course work by the start of the internship which
should include the subjects of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and mechanics of
materials.
Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in industrial machinery.
Ability to work effectively in field environments (outdoors, noise, heights, PPE).
Good communication, teamwork, and problem‑solving skills.
Software proficiency: Essential: Demonstrated Proficient use of Microsoft Office
applications, Access, Excel, Word, and Outlook, as well as other applicable stand
alone and network software.
Experience with commercial engineering software and CAD software, including
AutoCAD a definite asset.
Leadership Competencies:
Intellectual Horsepower: Is bright and intelligent; deals with concepts and
complexity comfortably; described as intellectually sharp, capable and agile.
