Teacher teaching in Charter Academy

Without question, no single decoration or paint color or furniture arrangement will even come close to the additive nature of the laughing, singing, and playing that will now occur after all of that hard work brought our first kindergarten class back to campus!” ~ CHF Dept. Chair, Ryan Dunn

We are so happy to announce that Weber State University Charter Academy (WSUCA) reopened on August 13, 2025, with the first group of kindergarten students. As the Teacher Education (TED) Dept. Chair, Ryan Cain commented: “How fitting that the first students and class in the new McKay Education Building was the WSUCA kindergarten class. The future of the school of education truly is GREAT, GREAT, GREAT at Weber State”.

Charter Academy at WSU was first opened from 2012 to 2022, but it paused its operation for two years due to the Moyes building renovation. According to the WSUCA website, the new Charter Academy is envisioned to be a unique early school experience that promotes excellence in teaching and learning for the academic, social, and emotional well-being of the whole child. The purpose of the school is to maintain focus on children and families through educational, co-curricular, and extracurricular programs, provide training in research-informed practices for Weber State University pre-service teachers, and provide a research center with opportunities for faculty and students to study various educational aspects.

The new WSUCA program not only has a redesigned mission and vision, but it has also expanded from a half-day to a full-day kindergarten program. Even though the 2025-2026 school year started solely with the enrollment of kindergarteners, the academy will continue to enroll students K-3 in the following years. “The first day of class at WSUCA was the culmination of an enormous amount of work and effort by many people, including the WSUCA Board of Directors, TED and ECE faculty, the new faculty/staff of WSUCA, and many other WSU faculty/staff in many different departments. We would like to thank all of our stakeholders for their commitment to making this reopening a reality despite the many changes and challenges“, said WSU Charter Academy Interim Director, Debbie Vaughn.
