Instructional Design Essentials for Adult Learners (IDEAL) Program

Instructional Design Essentials for Adult Learners (IDEAL) Program is designed for people pursuing or working in careers in adult education, career and technical education, competency-based education, and professional training contexts. The series of four courses helps teachers/trainers: 1) foster an engaging learning environment for students in adult learning contexts and programs, 2) plan and reflect on instruction suited for adults, 3) design hybrid and online courses integrating technology that engages adult learners, and 4) assess and evaluate the effectiveness of adult-learning and training programs. The program is offered in a hybrid synchronous format to provide flexibility for people who are working or prefer in-person learning.

EDUC 1210. Learning and Engagement for Adult Learners

This course focuses on helping teachers of adult learners create an inclusive learning environment by incorporating effective learning strategies and skills in an engaging, well-managed classroom.  


EDUC 1220. Instructional Planning and Assessment for Adult Learners

This course focuses on the identification or creation of instructional learning objectives, selecting and/or designing aligned assessments, planning engaging instructional activities, and enactment and reflection of instruction to meet the needs of all adult learners.


EDUC 2210. Designing Hybrid Courses for Adult Learners

This course is on the design of hybrid courses for adult learners. Students will practice designing a course using a Learning Management System, graphic design and tools for designing instructional material. Special emphasis in this course will be given to course accessibility.


EDUC 2220. Program Planning and Evaluation

This course focuses on the creation and evaluation of competency-based programs for adult learners including the development of program scope and sequence, program-level outcomes, program assessment plans, and program evaluation reporting.
