Teacher Assistant Pathway to Teaching (TAPT)

The purpose of the TAPT program is to support qualified candidates admitted into the TAPT Program, with the overall goal of developing highly competent teachers capable of delivering excellent instruction, serving as role models, and ensuring student success in school.

The ultimate goal for all TAPT participants is to obtain professional teacher licensure and a teaching position in Utah.

TAPT Application Qualifications and Requirements

To qualify for the Teacher Assistant Pathway to Teaching (TAPT), the following must be met:

  • Be employed as a teacher assistant, other district personnel, or substitute employed through staffing agencies within one of the following school districts:
    • Box Elder
    • Davis
    • Morgan
    • North Summit
    • Ogden
    • Weber
    • Area charters within any of the preceding school districts
  • Supervisor email addresses for recommendation.
    • This step will be completed during the application process.
  • Submit a high school diploma or equivalency.
  • Must not have a bachelor’s degree.

After acceptance into the program:

  • Complete the WSU full application process.
  • Take the Accuplacer Test before starting coursework.
  • Register for courses leading to teacher licensure.
  • Submit annual applications for scholarships and financial aid (FASFA).
    • TAPT pays only for undergraduate tuition for required courses. You are responsible for books, student fees, lab fees, and late fees.
  • Attend all six training sessions during the school year.
  • Submit annual evaluations.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Take classes in at least two out of the three semesters each school year.
  • Graduate with your degree and licensure within six years of program acceptance.

The TAPT Program

The TAPT program began at the request of six local district superintendents facing a critical teacher shortage. Weber State answered that call—and the need still exists today.

Thanks to generous private donors and the Utah State Board of Education, the program continues to thrive. Their support helps paraprofessionals advance their careers and strengthen our community’s educational system.
