GILBERTA CURTIS
master of business administration '24 outstanding service to the mba

At Weber State, I found a balanced program. I could actually keep my life while still going to school.

WHY WEBER STATE?

When I was considering furthering my education, I looked at several universities. But the price was always so discouraging. I felt I would have to quit my job, or put everything in my life aside in order to pursue  my education. But when the opportunity presented itself again, I was encouraged by my husband to "Look into Weber." Once I looked at the curriculum, I found it was exactly what I needed. The price was amazing, and the flexibility was everything I needed. I was a consultant at the time, and I was able to keep some of my smaller clients while still focusing on school. Choosing to pursue my MBA at Weber was the best choice I ever made. It was certainly a challenging journey, and a humbling one at times, but I feel I am graduating now with an increased ability to rely on peers and work as a team, and a better and deeper understanding of business issues, from ethical to practical.

WHY THE MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION?

I always knew that I wanted to continue my education. I come from a large family of 9 children - my mother never went to school, and my father had a 3rd grade education. They didn't feel that education was very important, but it became a focus for me at a young age. I worked very hard, taking whatever high school courses were necessary to get me into college. Upon graduation I got a full-ride scholarship to Cal Poly. Although circumstances didn't allow for me to attend that university, I kept my eyes open for other opportunities, and when they came, I took them. I was able to get my undergraduate degree, working 4 jobs to pay for it. After graduation, I was able to see first hand the advantages and open doors that education brings. I knew that I wanted an advanced degree, but everywhere I looked there were barriers; like cost, flexibility. But with Weber State, I found a balanced program. I could actually keep my life while going to school. I could come home at night and still be a parent, still be present, still fulfill my responsibilities. It was perfect for me. I'm a huge advocate for Weber State - I wear purple everywhere now!

FACULTY IMPACT

The marketing professors blew me away. And Dr. Francois - I really enjoyed his teaching style. The last day of class we presented, which I don't enjoy at all. But he told us that everyone needs to overcome some fears. He gave me hope. I loved his class. The program pushed me out of my comfort zone - especially the operations and supply chain classes. They forced me to apply concepts I've always wanted to learn, but everything was relevant and came alive. The Leaderships and Ethics class from Jennifer Anderson was also excellent - I like her style, and it allowed me to understand my true self. There were so many classes that had great impact on me.

ADVICE

Go for it. Do it. I thought I was going to give up so many times. There were classes that were difficult. But then  my husband would advise me to take it slower, and maybe drop one of the classes. At the beginning of the program I made a chart to track my progress, and when I saw that I was actually doing it, I got emotional. I thought, "It's happening - I'm actually doing it." Push along with the end in mind. It will give you the courage you need.

WHAT'S NEXT

I plan to continue consulting, and I'd like to find something where I can give back. I have a love and passion for this country - I'd like to find an area where I can contribute; perhaps in the Department of Defense.
