Dual Language Immersion Endorsement

This program will meet the requirements for the Dual Language Immersion Endorsement to be added to the elementary or secondary education licensure. Students must also demonstrate language proficiency at the Advanced Mid or higher Level, as determined by the Department of Foreign Languages. These courses taken at the graduate level may also be used as electives for the MEd degree. See the Department of Teacher Education or the Graduate Studies in Education office for more details. Course Requirements for Endorsement

Required Courses (17 credit hours)

  • EDUC 3375 / EDUC 6375: Foundations of Dual Language Immersion/Immersion Education (3 credits)
    • Offered fall semester
  • EDUC 4415 / EDUC 6415: Content-based Second Language Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment (3 credits)
    • Offered spring semester
  • EDUC 4270 / EDUC 6270: Literacy Strategies for Teaching English Language Learners (3 credits)
    • Offered spring semester (each year) and summer semester (even years)
  • EDUC 4740: Building Partnerships with ESL/Bilingual Families (1 credit)
    • Offered spring and summer semester
  • WLC 4400: Methods of Teaching a World Language (5 credits)
    • Offered spring semester
  • EDUC 5570: Field Experience in ESL/Bilingual Education* (2 credits)
    • Offered fall and spring semester

*EDUC 5570 needs to be completed with student teaching.

Endorsement programs are also offered through the graduate program as electives.

It is recommended that candidates for the Dual Language Immersion Endorsement also complete the ESL Endorsement with the following courses:

  • EDUC 4250/EDUC 6250 Second Language Acquisition: Theories and Implementation
  • ENGL 4420/MENG 6420 English Phonology and Syntax for ESL Teachers
  • ENGL 4450/MENG 6450 ESL Assessment: Theory, Methods and Practices

Note: students earning the endorsement must take the OPI with a score of advanced mid
