AIARE Level 1 Refresher

Details:
One day, field-based course for backcountry travelers with prior training who know that skills don't maintain themselves

  • Participants will need to provide their own touring equipment ie: AT, Telemark, or Splitboard (No snowshoes allowed on the course).
  • Participants will also need to bring enough food and water for a full day of touring.
  • Participants will be given a full equipment list prior to the course.
  • Participants will need to bring an avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe. All of this equipment can be rented from the WSU Outdoor Program.

Course Description

Pre-requisites: Prior completion of an AIARE 1, Avalanche Canada AST 1 + MAT courses, or comparable 24 hour introductory avalanche course is required. Contact matthewbarry@weber.edu if you have questions about whether your prior training qualifies. Avalanche Awareness events (such as Know Before You Go) and Backcountry 101/201 courses do not qualify. In this case, please consider taking an AIARE 1 course here.

Ability to skin uphill and ski/snowboard downhill through steep, ungroomed terrain under any weather or snowpack conditions (No snowshoes allowed on the course, contact us if you have a group of snowshoers who are interested in avalanche instruction).

You must be comfortable , efficient and confident using your uphill travel equipment and riding in deep powder and variable conditions. Please get out into the field prior to the course. If your ability in the field does not meet these standards, you may be excused from the course without a refund.

If your skills are not quite ready to step into this course, please seek out a weekend Backcountry 101 course through Ogden Avalanche, a single day Intro to Backcountry Touring, or an AIARE 1 (if your prior experience allows) through the WSU Outdoor Program
