Located in Elizabeth Hall, Room 210, the Ogden Writing Center is dedicated to empowering students to express themselves more confidently and more clearly.

We offer professional, friendly assistance with writing for any class or project - from course essays and research papers to personal statements and presentations. Whatever you are working on, we are here to help you succeed!

IN PERSON TUTORING SESSIONS

For an in-person tutoring session on campus, come to Elizabeth Hall, Room 210. The office assistant will help you get started.

In-person tutoring sessions are drop-in or by appointment.

How to conduct your tutoring appointment on campus
1. Log in at the kiosk at the entrance using your W number.
2. Unless you are brainstorming a project, print the writing you’d like to discuss with the tutor using the computer next to the printer. Printing is free for tutoring sessions. You can also email your paper to us at write@weber.edu and we will print it for you.
3. Have a seat and our office assistant will let the tutor know you're ready for tutoring!

ONLINE TUTORING SESSIONS

For a virtual tutoring session, please make sure your Zoom account is set up before your tutoring session. Visit WSU Zoom and then click "Sign In" to activate your Zoom account.

Virtual tutoring sessions are by appointment only.

How to conduct your tutoring appointment online
1. Each tutor has a unique Zoom link, which you will receive once you make an appointment in Starfish.
2. To share your paper with the tutor, open your Wildcat Email.
3. Click the 9-dot grid in the top right corner and select "Drive" (the colorful triangle).
4. Click "New" (top left), then "File Upload", and find your paper on your computer.
5. Open that file, click the "Share" button at the top and type in write@weber.edu.
6. Click "Send". Now you and your tutor can see the paper at the same time.

Making an Appointment through Starfish

Our tutors can work with you online or in person; choose the day and time that works best for you!
Make an appointment by emailing us at write@weber.edu or by signing into the Starfish app.

How to schedule an appointment through Starfish
1. Sign in to the Starfish app.
2. On the Dashboard screen, find the Starfish calendar.
3. Select your course you want help with.
4. Select one of the Writing Coach tutoring services.
5. Select "Schedule".
6. Select your desired appointment time and location.
7. Alternatively, use this Starfish link to take you directly to the Writing Coach scheduling page.
You will receive a confirmation email to your Wildcat email account.

What is the Writing Center?
How do I get the most out of an Ogden Writing Center tutoring session?
- Remember that you can talk with a tutor before you write the paper in order to understand the instructions or brainstorm ideas to research or write about.
- Come in early in the writing process and leave yourself time to revise.
- Schedule follow-up sessions. Planning well allows you time to revise and edit.
- Bring a description of the assignment if available.
- You may use the Writing Center printer to print your papers. You can open your Adobe projects on our computers.
- Arrive on time to your appointment so you don't lose your slot.

Can I just drop off my assignment and pick it up later?
Do I need to make an appointment?
- Making an appointment is a good way to assure that you can meet with a tutor on your schedule. You can make an appointment on Starfish, on the website, by calling us at 801-626-6463, or emailing write@weber.edu.
- You are welcome to just drop-in to the center. Drop-ins are served in the order they arrive.

What are tutoring sessions like?

You and the tutor sit together at one of our tables with a printed copy of your writing assignment. The tutor will ask if he or she may read your paper softly out loud in order for you both to read along together. We hope you will feel comfortable telling the tutor what you would like to work on with the writing, such as organization, development, thesis statement, structure, grammar, or citations. Be sure to ask questions as you go along!

AI POLICY

At the Weber State University Writing Center, we believe writing is a vital way for you to learn, think, and express your original ideas.

Our mission is to support your growth as a writer through student-centered and tutor-led sessions that focus on your unique voice rather than just a final product. By focusing on your own writing process, you ensure that you are building the critical thinking skills necessary for long-term academic success.

While we recognize AI as an emerging tool, it cannot replace human intelligence or the learning that happens when you engage deeply with an assignment. AI models are not “neutral” and are prone to bias which can undermine the validity or credibility of your work.

AI guidelines vary between departments and disciplines; therefore, it is your responsibility to follow the specific policy in your instructor’s syllabus. For instance, some English courses, such as ENGL 900, 1005, 1006, or 1007, generally prohibit all generative AI—including tools like Grammarly. The focus in these courses is to encourage students to develop their own writing skills and voice.

When visiting the Writing Center, please be transparent with your tutor about any AI use so we can best support your instructor's goals and your learning experience. Tutors will help you identify your ideas by asking thoughtful questions about your writing process so you can retain full ownership of your work.
