Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a free opportunity for current Weber State students. SI offers virtual and in-person study groups for specific courses led by a student leader who has already completed the course. SI aims to assist students in challenging courses by improving grades, reducing attrition rates and increasing graduation rates.
What is Supplemental Instruction?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) targets historically difficult courses rather than stigmatizing high-risk students. This approach allows the program to offer help with content material and study strategies for all students rather than just a few. SI Leaders offer three hours of group study sessions a week to accommodate as many students as possible.
SI, developed in 1973 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, has been recognized as an exemplary educational program by the U.S. Department of Education. Its effectiveness has been validated, with participating students consistently achieving higher grades, lower attrition rates and increased persistence at institutions compared to non-participants, regardless of ethnicity or prior academic achievement.
Courses with Supplemental Instruction
Coverage of courses with Supplemental Instruction depends on the availability of SI leaders.
