CETL Coaching Program
The CETL Coaching Program offers a way to make connections among faculty and instructors interested in enhancing their teaching practices. Faculty members can participate in this program as either teacher or instructional coach.
The program pairs one teacher with one coach for two years. During this time, the teacher-coach pair focuses on supporting the teacher’s growth as an instructor through observations and one-on-one meetings with the coach. The goal is to make small shifts in teaching that are individualized for the teacher within their own context, supported by a coach.
Become a Teacher!
For those interested in directly working on their teaching practice with the support of a peer, applying to be a teacher is the right fit. As a teacher in this program you will receive individualized support and attention from an instructional coach. To make the most out of your partnership with your coach we ask that you minimally engage in the following:
Year 1
- Fall: Meet with your coach to set teaching goals, followed by one classroom observation and a debrief meeting.
- Spring: Engage in two classroom observations and corresponding debrief meetings.
Year 2
- Fall: Participate in two classroom observations and debrief meetings. Begin co-planning an Intentional Teaching Intervention with your coach. The Intentional Teaching Intervention can be as intensive or relaxed as you’d like. Your coach will work with you to explore changes that fit your teaching style and goals.
- Spring: Conduct two more classroom observations and complete your Intentional Teaching Intervention, a targeted effort to align student learning with classroom practices.
The program accepts 5-10 teachers each year, and you will be notified of acceptance during the first week in May, and the program will start the following fall.

For those who already excel at or who are interested in learning how to provide productive, asset-based feedback about teaching, becoming a coach is for you. Key to a successful instructional coach is skills in active listening and purposeful observation. To support the coaches, we offer an initial training in May as well as a check-in meeting each year at the end of the fall semester. We estimate that being a coach in this program will take about 10 hours each semester.
