RHS and MSAT (3+2 Program) in 5 Years

Earn both your Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Sciences (RHS) and your Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) degrees at Weber State University in 5 years in this unique accelerated program, which consists of 3 years of undergraduate coursework and 2 years of graduate coursework.

Students can reduce their tuition by a full year's worth and start a career as an athletic trainer a year sooner.

To be eligible to apply to the RHS and MSAT program, you must be a Weber State student majoring in rehabilitation sciences, and must apply for conditional acceptance to the program.

PROGRAM TIMELINE and ADMISSIONS INFORMATION

The following is a possible timeline outlining the 5-year RHS and MSAT program for students. The MSAT website has more details about the MSAT program.

  • CONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE REQUIREMENTS

Students must first be conditionally accepted to the 3+2 Program.

In order to receive conditional acceptance, students must have a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.2, which includes receiving a grade of "B-" or better in all RHS courses and a grade of "C" or better in non-RHS courses.

Students must complete prerequisite course requirements, which are:

    All of the following courses:

    • HTHS 1101: Medical Terminology (2 credits)
    • RHS 1550: Introduction to Rehabilitation Sciences (2)
    • RHS 2175: Introduction to Sports Medicine (3)
    • RHS 2890: Introduction to Cooperative Work Experience (1)

One of the following sets of anatomy and physiology courses:

    • HTHS 2110: Integrated Human Anatomy and Physiology I (4) and HTHS 2111: Integrated Human Anatomy and Physiology II (4)
    • ZOOL 2320: Human Anatomy (4) and ZOOL 2420 LS: Human Physiology (4)

One of the following chemistry courses:

    • CHEM 1010 PS: Introductory Chemistry (3)
    • CHEM 1110 PS: Elementary Chemistry (4) and the accompanying lab class, CHEM 1115: Elementary Chemistry Lab (1)
    • CHEM 1200: Preparation for College Chemistry (3)

    One of the following courses:

    • RHS 1300: First Aid: Responding to Emergencies (2)
    • RHS 2300: Emergency Response (3)
    • PAR 1000 INT: Emergency Medical Technician (4) and the accompanying lab class, PAR 1001: Emergency Medical Technician Lab (2)

At the end of their first year, students should apply to the RHS and MSAT program through ATCAS. Students can apply during their second and third years, but we recommend applying as early as possible.

Prospective students should email our academic advisor at justinvaldez@weber.edu to set up an advising appointment, develop a plan and be placed on a conditional acceptance list.

  • RHS COURSEWORK and MSAT ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students should work on their remaining RHS degree coursework, which includes support courses, general education and 15 credits of upper division electives. Contact your academic advisor for suggested electives. This should be completed in their second year as an RHS major.

Students who are conditionally accepted to the accelerated MSAT program can enter the MSAT program once they have:

    • Completed 96 undergraduate credit hours
      • At least 30 of these credit hours must be taken at WSU to fulfill the university's residency requirement.
      • At least 16 of the 96 credit hours must be upper-division courses, and should/could include the following MSAT prerequisite courses:
        • ESS 3450: Structural Kinesiology (3)
        • ESS 3500: Biomechanics (3)
        • ESS 3510: Exercise Physiology (3)
        • PUBH 3150: Introduction to Public Health (3)
    • Completed all remaining RHS support courses and WSU general education requirements
    • Completed all MSAT prerequisites; the majority of these are fulfilled through the RHS support courses
    • Maintained an undergraduate GPA of 3.2
    • Observed or shadowed an athletic trainer for at least 50 hours
    • Submitted an application through ATCAS before the priority deadline of Dec. 1
      • Before submitting your application through ATCAS, email conradgabler@weber.edu to receive a coupon code for a discounted application fee.
    • Completed a program interview, whether in person or virtual

  • GRADUATE COURSEWORK

Begin the MSAT program and receive your bachelor's degree in rehabilitation sciences at the end of your fourth year (spring semester). The MSAT website has complete information about program admission, coursework, and retention requirements.

Beginning in the fourth year of the accelerated program, students will no longer be eligible to receive undergraduate scholarships or grants. Students will be considered graduate students for all financial aid and start paying graduate rates for tuition and fees.

As part of first-year MSAT coursework, the following classes satisfy the remaining undergraduate course requirements for the rehabilitation sciences degree via credit sharing:

    • MSAT 6085: Research Methods II (3)
    • MSAT 6200: Mental and Behavioral Health in Injury and Rehabilitation (3)
    • MSAT 6300: Orthopedic Assessment and Diagnosis I (3)
    • MSAT 6301: Orthopedic Assessment and Diagnosis II (3)
    • MSAT 6390: Foundations of Therapeutic Interventions (2)
    • MSAT 6400: Therapeutic Modalities for Musculoskeletal Injuries (2)
    • MSAT 6450: Therapeutic Rehabilitation I (3)
    • MSAT 6500 INT: Foundations of Athletic Training (3)
    • MSAT 6501 INT: Graduate Practicum I (3)

At the end of your fifth year (second year in the MSAT program), you'll graduate at the end of the spring semester with your Master of Science in Athletic Training and present your thesis at a professional conference.

Credit Sharing

Once students are conditionally accepted to the MSAT program, up to 24 credits of MSAT courses also count toward the rehabilitation sciences bachelor's degree via credit sharing.

As part of the credit sharing, rehabilitation sciences majors can bypass the following RHS required courses when they're conditionally accepted as an MSAT student:

  • RHS 3200: Psychology of Sport, Injury & Rehabilitation (3 credits)
  • RHS 3300: Evaluation and Care of Musculoskeletal Injuries: Lower Extremities (3)
  • RHS 3301: Evaluation and Care of Musculoskeletal Injuries: Upper Extremities (3)
  • RHS 4150: Therapeutic Modalities for Rehabilitation Sciences majors (3)
  • RHS 4250: Rehabilitation for Rehabilitation Sciences majors (3)
  • RHS 4650: Management for Rehabilitation Sciences majors (3)
  • RHS 4800 CRE: Individual Projects (3)
  • RHS 4890 INT: Cooperative Work Experience (3)

Keep in mind that if you have already completed the listed undergraduate course, you will not receive credit sharing for the course when you complete the graduate course requirements. Completion of the undergraduate RHS course does not waive the MSAT course requirement.
