Offered through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists® (CSCS®) are professionals who apply scientific knowledge to train athletes for the primary goal of improving athletic performance.

They conduct sport-specific testing sessions, design and implement safe and effective strength training and conditioning programs and provide guidance regarding nutrition and injury prevention. The CSCS certification prepares you to work as a strength coach at a high school, university, and other sports settings.

Eligibility and Requirements

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree or be enrolled as a college senior and have a current CPR/AED certification. Students in WSU’s Rehabilitation Sciences program should take PEP 3280 to prepare for the exam.

Candidates must pass an exam that will test their knowledge, skills and abilities in two areas of professional practice: scientific foundations and practical/applied.

More Information

Beginning in 2030, candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree from a program accredited by an National Strength and Conditioning Association-approved accrediting agency to be eligible for the CSCS examination. Degree requirements will focus on strength and conditioning. The current degree requirements for the CSCS exam will remain until Dec. 31, 2029.

Exams are available year round at testing locations around the United States. More details can be found on the NSCA website.

PHLEBOTOMY TRAINING

Take MLS 1113: Introduction to Medical Laboratory Practices. This class teaches safe practices for the laboratory practitioner, including specimen quality assurance, phlebotomy, urinalysis, basic concepts in clinical immunology, clinical chemistry, and clinical microbiology.

Students will receive a certificate of completion as a lab assistant, which is provided by the Dr. Ezekiel R. Dumke College of Health Professions. Phlebotomy is a small component of the course. Students draw blood twice during the semester, which is enough to gain exposure and some hands-on experience, but not enough to qualify for certification. With additional on-the-job training, however, they can become competent.
