Microsoft Recommends Upgrading to Windows 11

Windows 10 - End of Life October 14, 2025

On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will end support for the Windows 10 operating system. When this happens, Microsoft will no longer provide important security updates for computers running Windows 10. Weber State University IT and other technology support groups are working to upgrade all compatible machines to Windows 11 before October 14, 2025.

Why Update?

Weber State University Policies and Procedures for Information Technology and Security states "Operating Systems that are considered 'End of Life' my not be used." Continuing to use Windows 10 after the End of Life date of October 14, 2025 will be a violation of the WSU PPMs as well as pose a security risk for WSU data.

When Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, devices running Windows 10 will no longer receive critical security updates or bug fixes. Without these, Windows 10 will become increasingly vulnerable to new malware and exploits that could lead to data loss, system instability and unauthorized access to sensitive information. Additionally, operating systems considered End of Life are oftentimes not compatible with current software, which can lead to functionality issues and limit your ability to use the latest software.

Upgrading to Windows 11

Weber State University IT and other technology support groups are actively working to identify Windows 10 devices and upgrading compatible devices to Windows 11. If you are currently running a device that is on Windows 10, you should contact your CTC to schedule a time to upgrade your device to Windows 11.

The hardware requirements for devices to run Windows 11 are significantly stricter than they were for Windows 10. While most WSU owned devices are compatible with these requirements, some devices will not be eligible to upgrade and will need to be replaced. If your device is not compatible, we recommend that you contact you CTC to get assistance in picking a compatible replacement system.
