Declare Credit/No Credit, Audit a Class
Credit/no credit grading, or CR/NC, allows students to enroll in classes outside their major or minor on a pass or fail basis without affecting their grade point average.
Taking a class as audit allows students to attend a class without earning either a grade or credit for the class without affecting their GPA.
Declare Credit/No Credit
-
Rules for Declaring Credit/No Credit
- Freshman students may take no more than one class per term on a credit/no credit basis.
- Students with 30 or more credit hours who have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above may register for no more than two classes per term on a credit/no credit basis.
- A maximum of 20 hours of credit/no credit in elective courses may be used for graduation.
- Classes taken on a credit/no credit basis will not satisfy major, minor, general education or specific course requirements. The University Curriculum and General Education Committee have designated a few exceptions to this rule. Please visit with your academic advisor for information on these course exceptions.
- Grades on the credit/no credit system are not included in computing your term or cumulative GPA. A grade of credit is recorded only for letter grades of C- and above. Grades less than C-, including Unofficial Withdrawal (UW), will be recorded as no credit.
- Students who change their Program of Study must submit the appropriate form to the Records Office and request the grade be changed to the letter grade issued by the instructor if a credit/no credit course applies to the new Program of Study.
- If a student has previously taken a course for a letter grade, the same course may not be retaken for credit/no credit.
- Choice of credit/no credit registration should be made at the beginning of the term, but a student may change classes to credit/no credit status until the credit/no credit deadline.
- The instructor is not notified when a student takes a class for a credit/no credit grade. The instructor will assign a letter grade on the final grade report and then the Records Office will convert the letter grades to credit or no credit.

Potential Consequences of Declaring Credit/No Credit
Before declaring credit/no credit, understand the potential consequences and meet with your advisor to talk about them.
International Students
Receiving “no credit” may put an international student’s visa at risk. To maintain their visa eligibility, all undergraduate international students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours with 9 credit hours of Face to Face (FTF) and/or Hybrid (HYB-WSU), not Hybrid virtual, unless they have prior approval to enroll in less hours.
Graduate students must be enrolled in 9 credit hours with 6 credit hours of Face to Face (FTF) and/or Hybrid (HYB-WSU), not Hybrid virtual. Only the International Student and Scholar Advisors can approve you to enroll in less credit hours. Go to the International Student & Scholar Center website for more information.
Financial Aid Eligibility
Are you a recipient of Pell grants, loans or scholarships? Your eligibility for these forms of financial aid can change with CR/NC grades. The Financial Aid website has more information.
Degree Requirements
A credit (CR) grade cannot be used to complete major, minor or general education courses in most circumstances. If you are taking the course as an elective, then a CR grade is fine, but if you need the course to fulfill a degree requirement, CR/NC is probably not the right option for you.
Grade Point Average (GPA)
While CR/NC grades don't hurt your GPA, they don't help it either. If you were counting on a GPA bump, that won't happen with CR/NC grading.
Course Repeats
A CR grade cannot replace a letter grade for a course that has been previously taken.
Course Transferability
We hope you stay at Weber State, but if you plan to transfer your coursework to another institution, CR/NC grades may only be accepted as elective credit or may not be accepted at all.
Graduate/Professional School
Do you have plans for graduate or professional school? CR/NC grades may not be accepted, or may make your application less competitive. We cannot guarantee how other institutions will treat these grades.
If you have been conditionally accepted into a graduate program contingent on completion of a specific course with a minimum letter grade in order to be fully admitted, the CR/NC option may not work for you.
Student Athletes
Student athletes must maintain specific academic standards for NCAA eligibility, including minimum enrollment, minimum GPA, and satisfactory academic progress. Selecting CR/NC or Withdrawal (W) grades may hurt your academic eligibility. Talk to your athletics advisor for more information.
Veterans/GI Bill
Dropping classes or changing to an NC or Withdrawal (W) grade will change your rate of pursuit and may create a debt with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for tuition, monthly housing allowance and book stipend. The Military-Affiliated Student Center website has more information.
Audit a Class

Rules for Auditing a Class
- Students registering to audit will pay tuition and fees per the current tuition and fee schedule.
- Students in regulated programs, such as Financial Aid and Athletics, are subject to the respective program guidelines for audit registration.
