Master of Social Work FAQ

The program emphases are:

• Clinical Practice in Social Work
• The needs of individuals, families, and communities in Northern Utah
• Harm reduction
• Clinical practice skills relevant to Utah’s growing Latino/é population

Advanced Standing 1-year Program

• Student must have a bachelor’s degree in social work within 5 years
• 30 students accepted each cycle

Traditional 2-year Program

• Student can have any bachelor’s degree
• 30 students accepted each cycle

Our MSW graduate program is full-time with courses taught in a hybrid format . MSW students attend classes in person at the WSU Ogden campus and complete coursework online.

Students should expect to take a minimum of 15 credits each semester. Classes are held weekly on Thursdays and Fridays. We cannot guarantee a schedule of either all day Thursday or all day Friday

Classes are held anytime between 7:30 a.m. and 8:10 p.m. during the fall & spring semesters. We offer both full semester and block course formats. Electives can be taken at any time in a student’s final year of the program (including in the summer).

Alongside their coursework, students will complete a practicum experience in the field. 

1st Year Students

• 400 Hours (Anticipate 15 hours per week)

2nd Year and Advanced Standing Students

• 500 hours (Anticipate 20 hours per week)

The vast majority of our practicum placements offer a form of stipend to the students. We cannot guarantee placement at an agency that pays.

Applications are open July 1 through October 15 each year. Decisions will be made by December 15.

Advanced Standing Students
