Who is eligible for the Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program?

You are eligible for VUB if you served in any component of the U.S. Armed Forces, including Active Duty, National Guard, or Reserves (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Space Force). To qualify, you must meet the following criteria:

• Discharge Status: You must have received a discharge that is other than Dishonorable.
• AND satisfy at least one of the following "need-based" factors:
  • Low-Income Status: You meet federal low-income guidelines (Check eligibility here).
  • First-Generation College Student: Neither of your parents or guardians received a Bachelor’s degree prior to your 18th birthday.
  • Academic Need: It has been six or more years since you last attended school, or you require a refresh of basic skills to succeed in a postsecondary environment.

What paperwork do I need to bring with me?

We do not require initial paperwork. When you complete your application, you are asserting that all provided information is accurate to the best of your knowledge. Our goal is to remove barriers to entry, not create them.

How will Veterans Upward Bound help me?

VUB acts as your advocate and bridge to higher education, focusing on academic preparation and "wrap-around" success supports. We help you navigate the transition from military to academic life through:

• Refresher Courses & Basic Skills: We provide instruction in Math and English to prepare you for institutional placement tests and college-level coursework.
• College Access Assistance: We assist with the admissions process and help you apply to the postsecondary institution of your choice.
• Professional Tutoring: While you pursue your degree, you will have access to professional tutors to support your academic journey.
• Financial & Career Advising: We provide help with FAFSA completion, scholarship applications, and career exploration.
• Community Connections: While our primary focus is academia, we connect you with community partners who provide essential services such as healthcare, housing, and veteran-specific benefits.

How much does it cost?

All VUB services are provided at no cost to you. Veterans Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO grant program. These services are a benefit you have already earned through your dedicated service to our nation.

How long can I be in the program?

VUB services remain available to you as you progress toward your postsecondary degree or credential. While we recognize that adult learners often face extended timelines—taking an average of 13.5 years to finish a degree compared to 10 years for younger students—our goal is to provide the intensive support needed to help you graduate within six years.
