The Origins of Justice, London, England & Paris, France.

Program Details 

The Origins of Justice: London & Paris is a 10-day study abroad program exploring the historical roots of the U.S. criminal justice system through its English common law origins and the democratic ideals of the French Revolution. Students will visit key cultural and historical sites in London and Paris, including the Tower of London, Old Bailey, Conciergerie, and the Catacombs of Paris. Alongside professional tours, guest speakers, and academic activities, participants will reflect on the development of modern justice systems and engage in comparative analysis of U.S., English, and French practices. Students earn 3 elective credits in Criminal Justice, Sociology, or related fields.

Selection Criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid passport required
  • Preference for WSU undergraduate/graduate students in:
    • Criminal Justice, Sociology, Social & Behavioral Sciences
  • Group size: minimum 12 students, maximum 20 students
  • No medical exam required, but participants should be prepared for daily walking and stairs

Cost

Cost: $3,250 

Deposit: $500 Deposit is due 72 hours after registration. If not paid in that timeframe, you may be dropped from your trip.

Trip must be paid in full before departure.

Payments can now be made online! Visit this website for instructions on how to pay your deposit and future payments online. Charges should show on your account within 24-48 hours after registration. If you want to pay with cash or check, please pay at the Hurst Center for Lifelong Learning.

Includes: insurance, tuition, room and board, local transportation abroad, excursions, and some meals.

Not included: airfare, visa fees, passport, incidentals, excess baggage costs, any unscheduled travel, and some meals.

This program supports Weber State’s sustainability goals and contributes to carbon-neutral travel initiatives.

Itinerary

London (5 Days):

  • Day 1: Arrival, bus tour, Westminster (Abbey & Parliament), Evening guided walking tour by professors, then free time to settle in.
  • Day 2: Tower of London, Old Bailey court, white napkin lunch at The Clink (HMP Brixton), Thames River night cruise
  • Day 3: Changing of the Guard, Clink Museum, Jack the Ripper tour, Witness for the Prosecution (play).
  • Day 4: Guided tour of historic inns, Tea experience, Les Misérables
  • Day 5: Free time in the morning → Afternoon Eurostar to Paris

Paris (4 Days):

  • Day 1: Conciergerie, Sainte-Chapelle, Notre Dame exterior, Seine River cruise
  • Day 2: Louvre, justice-themed walking tour (Bastille), Victor Hugo House
  • Day 3: Eiffel Tower, Paris Catacombs, free time in the evening
  • Day 4: Optional day trip to Normandy/Omaha Beach or explore Paris on your own.

Students who participate in this study abroad program will be able to register for up to three (3) semester credits through Weber State University in:

  • CJ 4950 (3)
  • MCJ 6250 (3)
  • SOC 4950 (3)

Trip Cancellations

If Weber State cancels a trip for any reason, all participants will be refunded 100% of funds paid to the school. If a participant withdraws from the program for any reason, they are subject to the refund policy found on the first page of the application. Deposits are always non-refundable, unless the program is canceled by Weber State. No refunds will be issued 30 days prior to program start date.
