French Cuisine and Viniculture

Program Details 

French Cuisine and Viniculture: French Language, Food & Wine in Bordeaux is a three-week study abroad program that combines language learning with hands-on cultural immersion. Students will take morning French language classes at the NewDeal Institut in Bordeaux and participate in afternoon excursions exploring France’s world-renowned food and wine traditions. Activities include vineyard and winery tours, cooking workshops, museum visits, city walking tours, and tastings. The program emphasizes intercultural learning, linguistic improvement, and the exploration of French gastronomy and viticulture as expressions of identity, culture, and history.

Selection Criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Minimum group: 8 students; Maximum group: 14 students.
  • Language prerequisite: FRCH 1010 or equivalent proficiency
  • Student should be in good health; the program involves walking, hiking, and active participation in excursions.

Cost

Cost: $4250

Deposit: $500  Deposit is due 72 hours after registration. If not paid in that timeframe, you may be dropped from your trip.

Payments can now be made online! Visit this website for instructions on how to pay your deposit and future payments online. Charges should show on your account within 24-48 hours after registration. If you want to pay with cash or check, please pay at the Hurst Center for Lifelong Learning.

Includes: insurance, tuition, room and board, local transportation abroad, excursions, and some meals.

Not included: airfare, visa fees, passport, incidentals, excess baggage costs, any unscheduled travel, and some meals.

This program supports Weber State’s sustainability goals and contributes to carbon-neutral travel initiatives.

Itinerary

Itinerary subject to change

  • Jun 20: Depart SLC
  • Jun 21: arrive in Bordeaux; host-family pick up and orientation
  • Jun 22 ~ Jul 10
    • Morning: French language classes at NewDeal Institut
    • Afternoon: Guided cultural activities such as
      • Walking and food tours in Bordeaux
      • Visits to local museums and La Cité du Vin
      • Excursions to vineyards in Médoc and Saint-Émilion
      • Cooking classes (e.g., crêpe atelier)
      • Day trips to Dune du Pilat, Blaye Citadel, and nearby villages
    • Evenings: Host-family dinners and free exploration time
  • Jul 11: Depart Bordeaux / return to SLC

    Post-trip (July 11 – August 8): Online coursework, reflection journal, and final project submission

Academic Courses

Students will earn 6 credits in French, placed by proficiency level at the time of enrollment. Courses include combinations of the following,  depending on placement: 

  • FRCH 1700 HU & FRCH 1852 - Beginning Level
  • FRCH 2030 & FRCH 2852 - Intermediate Level
  • FRCH 3550 & FRCH 3850 - Advanced Level
  • FRCH 4690 & FRCH 4850 - Capstone / Senior Level

    Morning courses are taught at the NewDeal Institut-Bordeaux, and coursework includes pre- and post- travel assignments through Canvas.

Trip Cancellations

If Weber State cancels a trip for any reason, all participants will be refunded 100% of funds paid to the school. If a participant withdraws from the program for any reason, they are subject to the refund policy found on the first page of the application.  Deposits are always non-refundable, unless the program is canceled by Weber State.  No refunds will be issued 30 days prior to program start date.
