SAS Awards Criteria

Outstanding Individual Awards 

  • Contributes in an outstanding way to the development and holistic education of students.
  • Exhibits qualities and values consistent with the philosophy of WSU SAS: Respect, Integrity, Student-Centered, Collaboration, Inclusion, Accountability.
  • Establishes effective relationships with coworkers/colleagues and contributes to the success of others with whom they work.
  • Demonstrates excellent skills (customer service, job knowledge, etc.) and an enthusiastic attitude when performing their responsibilities at the university.
  • Provides service and contributions beyond the expectations of the nominee’s position

Outstanding Team Performance Award

  • The team has created, implemented, and/or managed one or more innovative programs during the academic year for which the award is presented.
  • These programs have contributed in a significant way to the goals and mission of the SAS Division.
  • The team has demonstrated success through concrete and specific measurable outcomes.
  • Members of the team share responsibility and work together effectively.

Toni Weight Lifetime Achievement Award

Purpose

To recognize individuals who have made consistent, significant achievements in the development and holistic education of students, particularly in areas that enhance and support students' intellectual, academic, psychological, social, and emotional development.

Context

This award is presented in honor of Toni Weight, who served WSU from 1975 - 2006 as a significant, consistent advocate of student development, both personal and academic.

Criteria

  • Must have been engaged in student development activities for no less than 15 years. Such activities will typically span multiple departments and are not limited to WSU-specific experience.
  •  Must have been employed by WSU as a professional staff member for no less than 10 years.
  • Must be employed by WSU as a SAS employee at the time of the award. 
    • Rare exceptions may be made for individuals who have recently and honorably left WSU service. Such exceptions would require significant justification for final VPSAS approval.
  • Must demonstrate significant contributions to the holistic education of students. Examples of such contributions include, but are not limited to:
    • Publication in peer-reviewed journals in the field of student development, student success or academic fields that support student development.
    • General consensus by WSU faculty, staff, students and/or alumni regarding the individual's achievements.
    • A demonstrable history of unique, effective, timely and/or innovative creation, implementation, and/or management of programs which have contributed to student development.
    • Previous recognition of nominee achievement by other bodies, such as the Student Senate, Faculty Senate, employee recognition committees, and/or student-supported award committees.
    • Involvement in areas, programs, and/or initiatives that have successfully promoted student development through generally recognized indicators of student success, such as recruitment, retention, graduation, scholarships, community engagement, or other similar metrics.
  • Must demonstrate significant, extraordinary, and lasting impact on WSU, including its students, faculty, and the community served by the university. Examples may include committee involvement, public or private sector board participation, volunteerism, and civic engagement.
  • Must be in good standing with WSU and the community it serves.
