Avoid Icon

AVOID

AVOID the threat.

This starts with your state of mind:

  • Pay attention to your surroundings.
  • Have an exit plan.
  • If you can, move or run away from the threat as quickly as possible.
  • Try to create as much distance as possible between you and the threat.
  • If you can't run, ask for help. Look for ways to DENY access to your location.
  • If the situation requires it, move quietly to AVOID detection.
  • Once you're in a safe place, call 911 and provide as much detail as possible.
Deny Icon

DENY

DENY access to your location.

When getting away is difficult or impossible:

  • Keep as much distance between you and the threat as you can.
  • Lock doors to prevent entry or slow down the attacker.
  • Turn off the lights and stay out of sight.
  • Barricade doors with furniture, equipment, and heavy objects.
  • Look for alternate exits. If safe to do so, you may need to break windows.
  • If there are no other exits, get behind solid objects that can provide cover.
  • Silence your phone and stay quiet.
  • Text 911 and type in your exact location.
Defend Icon

DEFEND

DEFEND yourself.

When you can't avoid the threat or deny access to your location:

  • You have the right to defend yourself.
  • If you're with others, work together to make a quick plan to disarm or disable the attacker.
  • Look for objects you can use as makeshift weapons.
  • Be aggressive and fully commit to your actions.
  • Use every advantage against the attacker.
  • This is about SURVIVAL.
