Industry Experience
Derek brings more than 23 years of industry experience across aerospace, defense, and complex systems development, spanning roles as a systems engineer, technical leader, and senior program manager. His career includes extensive work with large-scale, mission-critical systems in highly regulated environments, where he has led multidisciplinary teams responsible for systems engineering, digital engineering, configuration management, software integration, quality assurance, and organizational learning. He has managed multi-million-dollar programs, partnered closely with government and industry chief engineers, and supported the full system life cycle from early requirements definition through integration, sustainment, and continuous improvement.
Most recently, he served as a Senior Technical Program Manager for Digital Engineering at BAE Systems, where he led organizational transformation efforts integrating model-based systems engineering, risk management, and modern program management practices. His work included developing enterprise-level engineering processes, authoring strategic analyses and white papers, leading successful CMMI Level 3 certification efforts, and advising government organizations on acquisition, governance, and technical decision-making. Earlier roles at BAE Systems, TASC, L-3 Communications, and the U.S. Air Force provided hands-on experience in weapon system communications, advanced networking systems, acquisition support, and operational avionics and communications systems. This blend of technical depth and leadership experience informs his applied, practice-driven approach to systems engineering education.
