Frequently Asked Questions

Most of our classes require and assume that the students are knowledgeable in one or more of the following subjects:

• Linear algebra
• Calculus based probability and statistics, upper division 3000 level and higher
• Calculus I & II
• Advanced topics related to derivatives and integration
• Trigonometry
• Computer programming

Note, math courses have pre-reqs and often those pre-reqs have requirements of a certain grade and an expiration date.  (For example, a minimum grade of a C and will expire as a prerequisite 24 months after it was completed)

Since this is an engineering masters degree it is imperative that graduates have the engineering foundations to navigate the technical disciplines of the v-model.  The program draws its foundations, integrity, and rigor from professional societies such as NSPE National Society of Professional Engineers, INCOSE International Council on Systems Engineering, and INFORMS Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

With guiding principles of:

• Creating a world where the public can be confident that engineering decisions affecting their lives are made by qualified and ethically accountable professionals - NSPE
• Accept responsibility for one's actions and engineering results, including being open to ethical scrutiny and assessment - INCOSE
• Using proven scientific mathematical processes that enable organizations to turn complex challenges into substantial opportunities by transforming data into information, and information into insights that save lives, save money and solve problems - INFORMS

The program reviews the entire student portfolio, including bachelors program, calculus and statistics grades, rigor of courses taken (upper division), work experience, professional certifications, and participation in the systems community.  After the review, applicants may require leveling courses such as chemistry, physics, upper division math and statistics, or strengthening their portfolio by becoming involved in the systems community.  Becoming an INCOSE member and attending chapter meetings will be viewed as strengthening your portfolio.

Professional certifications can allow a student to obtain advanced standing and skip introductory courses - this means you can start taking advanced courses sooner.  This is reviewed on a case by case basis and awarded at academic departmental discretion. Examples include:

GRE test scores are required if all previous degrees were conferred by an institution outside of the U.S.
 
GRE scores will be used to make admission decisions but no specific minimum score is required. For information about taking the GRE, go to https://www.ets.org/gre

Individuals who have already completed a graduate-level program and are well into established careers in a related field may be admitted without the GRE requirement, based on admission committee approval.

Preference is given to graduates of universities that are members of:

• The German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat, WR)
• The High Council for the Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (Hcéres, France)
• The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA, UK)
• The Polish Accreditation Committee (Polska Komisja Akredytacyjna PKA)
• The Hungarian Accreditation Committee (Magyar Felsőoktatási Akkreditációs Bizottság MAB)
• European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA)

Official transcripts of your academic record from all previous colleges or universities attended should be submitted. For the fastest and most efficient transcript ordering experience, please order your official transcripts online through the National Student Clearinghouse. 

All electronic transcripts should be sent from the clearinghouse or directly from the institution to the following email address: msse@weber.edu

Log into your application and see the Status Board for updates on receipt of your transcripts, recommendations, and other required documentation. If your status board is showing all green "received" check marks, the application is complete and ready for committee review

 

Make sure to allow pop-ups, try a different browser, or pay via the Cashier's Office and email the receipt to msse@weber.edu. Let the cashier know the application fee is for the MSSE detail code for the appropriate applicant type below:

Adding and dropping a MSSE course is per the Office of the Registrar.  The calendars can be located in the eweber portal.
A student may repeat a course with permission of the program and course instructor. Credits for the course may not be earned beyond the limit set by guidelines of the graduate program.

 

First, congrats on your accomplishment.  Next steps include:

• Setup a transcript review
• Since you are on an accelerated schedule, setup up a grad map review
• If your PAQ agreement is 3 semesters, it is highly encouraged to start the MSSE summer semester.  This will ensure a meaningful senior capstone project to build your resume and leverage networking opportunities.

Non-Resident Tuition Waivers are available to non-resident students who have an overall GPA of 3.25 upon entry into the program. Eligible students will receive a tuition waiver* for the non-resident portion of their tuition. Non-resident and international students must maintain a 3.25 GPA to continue to receive the waiver and must notify msse@weber.edu each semester to request the waiver be applied to their tuition. Terms may change due to funding availability. 

*Tuition waivers do not include the cost of the graduate differential or student fees. 

Upon earning departmental honors students will be recognized with the following:

• Your transcript and degree diploma will be printed with the distinction, "Departmental Honors in Master of Science in Systems Engineering."
• You will receive an invitation to all Honors Program social and educational events.
• You will receive an invitation to the Honors Nye Banquet when you graduate.
