Exercise & Sport Science
- Mission Statement
The ENS department mission statement: The Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences (ENS) supports and enhances the mission of the University through learning, access, and community partnerships in exercise and nutrition sciences. We provide effective instruction, exploratory research, and engaged service to prepare exercise, fitness, and nutrition professionals for the workforce and graduate studies and to promote optimal health, human performance, and overall well-being.
The Exercise and Sport Science Program mission statement: The mission of the Exercise and Sport Science Program is to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to enhance human lives through physical activity.
The Exercise and Sport Science (ESS) Program supports the university’s mission of cultivating successful students by teaching inductive and logical reasoning, evidence-supported problem solving and decision-making, as well as exercise science-specific knowledge and skills through effective instruction and scholarly and community engagement. Graduates will become successful in facilitating positive and active lifestyles through conducting health and fitness evaluations and designing appropriate exercise prescriptions to individuals of diverse populations.

- Associate Degree (Not Applicable)
- Bachelor Degree
At the end of their study at WSU, students in this program will:
- Reflective and empirical thinking: Students will problem solve and/or make decisions based on deep reflection and empirical, logical, thinking.
- Quantitative literacy: Students will demonstrate the comprehension of quantitative data and the ability to reason using quantitative analysis.
- Effective communication: Students will practice effective communication using scientific writing, active listening, and verbal and nonverbal communication.
- Cultural competency: Students will describe the impact of values and cultures of their own and of others on health literacy, health risks, and physical activity and other lifestyle behaviors related to health and wellness.
- Exercise physiology knowledge: Students will accurately apply exercise physiology concepts in conducting and evaluating health and fitness assessments, developing exercise programs, and prescribing exercise for health and performance improvement.
- Kinesiology & biomechanics knowledge: Students will effectively use muscle mechanics and biomechanical concepts to evaluate musculoskeletal movements, thereby facilitating performance enhancement and mitigating potential injury risks.
- Health & fitness assessment: Students will independently conduct health and fitness assessments and interpret results based on the standards established by American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association, and other relevant organizations.
- Exercise program design: Students will design exercise prescription programs appropriate to the target populations using sound scientific principles and reasoning.

- Program and Contact Information
The Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences (ENS) in the Jerry & Vickie Moyes College of Education offers programs that teach skills and knowledge needed to maintain and enhance human performance and well-being through exercise, fitness, sport and optimal nutrition. We offer undergraduate students exceptional educational experiences in a variety of teaching environments supported by faculty with diverse expertise. Our state-of-the-art facilities — including fully equipped laboratories (biomechanics, human performance, nutritional biochemistry and foods), a networked computer lab, and ample indoor and outdoor fitness and activity arenas — provide outstanding areas for student instruction and research.
With a curriculum designed to develop professional knowledge and skills, our graduates enter the workforce as fitness and nutrition professionals in a variety of educational, health and fitness settings, and are prepared to pursue graduate studies in their respective career fields. Through instruction, scholarship and service, our department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Exercise and Sport Science (Fitness Professional and Exercise Science tracks) and Nutrition Education (Integrative Nutrition and Sports Nutrition tracks) and a Nutrition Education minor. We also support the efforts of undergraduates seeking Departmental Honors and/or the Bachelor of Integrated Studies degree, offering Exercise Science and Nutrition Education and as emphases for the BIS Program.
