Alternative Work Arrangement Guiding Principles

At Weber State, our primary goal is to provide robust educational experiences for students in an in-person environment. In order to meet students where they are, we also aspire to offer extended, convenient availability for students and to provide a selection of programs and services to students in a virtual environment. Alternative work arrangements can vary from flexible scheduling to partial or complete remote work.

Positive Impact

All decisions with alternative work arrangements should be designed to enhance and move fulfillment of our university mission forward. Decisions should be made primarily from an organizational perspective and whether or not there will be a net positive gain for both business results and the work environment. Considerations for remote work arrangements will involve determining if they help to provide greater levels of access and services for students.


Our institutional collaborative, collegial, and transparent culture focused on student success is of utmost importance. Remote work should not detract from this. Completely remote and out-of-state employment decisions will be the exception, not the rule. Our institutional culture is built primarily around serving and providing for the community of Northern Utah.


When executing alternative work arrangements, our goal is to create equitable processes, which means that positions will be analyzed in a fair and impartial way. Each position will be analyzed in a distinct manner then individual employee eligibility will be determined. The supervisor’s ability to maintain culture and enhance the organization, the position itself, and then the particular employee should each be considered when making decisions, in that order. 


Decisions are not permanent. Alternative work arrangements are intended to provide flexibility, and as an institution, we will continuously examine our practices and philosophy regarding alternative work to remain responsive to institutional and community needs.
