Health promotion prepares you to promote health and wellness and prevent disease as a personal pursuit, as a career or as you continue on to graduate school.

What You’ll Learn

You will learn about wellness and how to help individuals and groups prevent disease, enhance their health and improve their quality of life. Completion of this program qualifies you to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) exam offered by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC).

Employment Opportunities

Health promotion graduates provide expertise in positive behavior change and healthy lifestyles and promote health and wellness programs in community, corporate, clinical, non-profit and educational settings.

Specific job activities include health screening and assessment, health program planning and evaluation and working with individuals and groups on such health-related topics as stress management, nutrition, weight control, smoking cessation and other lifestyle factors that affect individual well-being.

Degree Information

Grade Requirements

A grade of “C” or better in all major coursework, in addition to a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50.

Credit Hour Requirements

A total of 120 credit hours is required for graduation; 53-55 of these are required within the major. A total of 40 upper division credit hours is required (courses number 3000 and above); a minimum of 37 of these is required within the major.

Online Distance Learning

The health promotion program may be completed through distance learning, which consists of online or independent study courses, although not every course is offered through a distance learning format every semester. Through careful schedule planning, students can complete their program of study without taking any face-to-face courses.
