Water Safety Instructor

Course Description:

The Water Safety Instructor course teaches candidates how to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program. This includes Parent and Child Aquatics, Pre-School Aquatics, Learn to Swim, Adult Swim, and various water safety presentations.


  • Candidates must be 16 years old before the last date of the class
  • Must pass a pre-course evaluation with the following elements:
    • Swim the following strokes at a Level 4 proficiency:
      • 25 yards Freestyle
      • 25 yards Backstroke
      • 25 yards Breaststroke
      • 25 yards Elementary Backstroke
      • 25 yards Sidestroke
      • 15 yards Butterfly
    • Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
    • Tread water for 1 minute
    • Attendance is required at all sessions in order to pass the course


  • $160 for WSU students/faculty/staff and $170 for community members
    • Cost includes non-refundable $10 pre-test

    • This is a Blended Learning Course. Students will receive instructions on accessing online content once registered for the course.
