Do Not Use Text in Images

example of embedded text saying, Do Not Do This

Instead, put your text directly on the page, like this.

When placing text on top of images, it should be done correctly by a web developer, be visible and readable and with appropriate contrast for readability. Ask for help.

Text alternatives (also known as alt text) must accompany most images in order to make the content and purpose of the image accessible. Alt text can be added in the Site Manager interface in the same area where you place a photo.

Keep alternative text concise. No more than 10-15 words.

Add Alt Text:

  • If the image is necessary for understanding the page content.
  • If an image is used inside of a link or as a button, the alternative text should describe the link's destination or the button's purpose

Dos and Don'ts

DO: Use high resolution images provided by Weber State University's marketing department at wsuucomm.smugmug.com.

DON’T: Take a photo of what you wrote on the whiteboard in class and post it online.

WebAIM WAVE Accessibility Tool

The WAVE web accessibility tool is a browser plugin that reviews webpages and will note any images missing alt text. Then, you can decide whether the image requires it. It installs easily in your browser and can tell you if a webpage meets accessibility guidelines in numerous ways.
