Studying Art Education at Weber State

Weber State’s art education programs provide artistic students who want to become educators with the skills and experience to begin your careers in the classroom.

Art Education Highlights

If you choose the Bachelor of Fine Arts program, you will complete a capstone thesis project for exhibition in Weber State’s Shaw Gallery at the conclusion of your thesis class.

Beyond the Classroom

Weber State’s Art Guild allows you to meet others who share your passion for art.

The Department of Art and Design offers a study abroad trip to Italy during the Venice Biennale, one of the most important international exhibitions of contemporary art.

You may also participate in travel-study opportunities closer to home. In past years, art students visited galleries in Los Angeles, practiced sketching and drawing in Capitol Reef National Park, and learned about photography in Big Sur and the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

What You’ll Learn at Weber

While both of Weber State’s art education degrees offer training in art history, art theory and studio work, the Bachelor of Fine Arts is more focused on these areas and does not require a minor or language courses like the Bachelor of Arts.

The Bachelor of Arts degree offers a greater breadth of study, since you must complete a minor and language courses that enhance and broaden your skill and knowledge sets.

Both degree programs prepare you for teaching careers.

What You Can Do After Weber

The National Association of Schools of Art and Design prefer that prospective art teachers seek a Bachelor of Fine Arts because it is more focused on studio work, art theory and other art-related topics than the Bachelor of Arts.

However, the Bachelor of Arts degree benefits students who plan to work in a school system where a greater breadth of knowledge is required.

Both degrees lead to secondary licensure, allowing you to teach in grades 6-12.

You’ll also be prepared to seek your Master of Fine Arts or a similar graduate degree.
