CPR/AED and First Aid Certification
The CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with First Aid course teaches participants how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies for an adult, child, and infant, how to use an AED, and basic First Aid skills. The certification is valid for two years and no prerequisites are required. All classes are held in the Campus Recreation Conference Room (WI101B) unless otherwise stated.
Costs
- WSU Faculty/Staff/Student: $55
- Community Member: $70
- Participants may purchase a CPR Mask for $15. Participants who choose not to purchase a mask will be provided with a practice mask for the skill session. Masks are sanitized between each use to the American Red Cross Standard.
Prerequisites
No prerequisites.
If the course is canceled by WSU Campus Recreation, you will receive a 100% refund.
If participants cancel after the registration within 7 days of the scheduled program, you will not receive a refund.
If participants cancel registration anytime prior the aforementioned 7 day refund deadline, you will receive a 50% refund of the registration cost. -
Water Safety Instructor
The Water Safety Instructor course teaches candidates how to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program. This includes Parent and Child Aquatics, Pre-School Aquatics, Learn to Swim, Adult Swim, and various water safety presentations.
Costs
- $150 for WSU students
- $160 for WSU faculty/staff
- $170 for community members
Prerequisites
Candidates must be 16 years old before the last date of the class.
Must pass a pre-course evaluation with the following elements:
Swim the following strokes at a Level 4 proficiency:- 25 yards Freestyle
- 25 yards Backstroke
- 25 yards Breaststroke
- 25 yards Elementary Backstroke
- 25 yards Sidestroke
- 15 yards Butterfly
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).
- Tread water for 1 minute.
Attendance is required at all sessions in order to pass the course.

Lifeguard Training
The primary purpose of the courses in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to:
- Prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies.
- Provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) professionals take over.
- Participants are required to attend all course sessions and pass a written and skills test with at least 80% in order to pass. The minimum age for this class is 15 years old by the last day of class.
Prerequisites
15 years of age before the last day of the class
Must pass a pre-course evaluation with the following elements:
- Swim, Tread, Swim Sequence: Swim 150yds (front crawl or breaststroke) nonstop, tread water for 2 min using only legs, swim 50yds (front crawl or breaststroke).
- Timed Event: Swim 20 yards, retrieve 10 lb brick from 7-10ft deep, swim 20 yards with brick within 1 minute 40 seconds

- Cost includes non-refundable $10 fee for pre-test

Refunds are not provided for courses except in extenuating circumstances. If a participant cannot pass the prerequisite skills, a refund will be provided, minus a $10 fee.

CPR/AED and First Aid Instructor Course
Become an instructor! This course presents the material and evaluation for participants to become a Red Cross Instructor for CPR and First Aid for the Professional Rescuer. This can be a valuable certification for professionals in many fields, as well as community group leaders, youth leaders, etc.
Completion of this course does not assume employment at WSU.

- Participants may purchase a CPR Mask for $15 (Participants who choose not to purchase a mask will be provided with a practice mask for the skill session. Masks are sanitized between each use to the American Red Cross Standard.)
Prerequisites
In order to participate in this course, you must currently be certified by the American Red Cross in one of the following:
- CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers
- Lifeguarding
- Basic Life Support
- Emergency Medical Response
