One-on-one Advising & Mentoring Support
Each participating school has a GEAR UP College Access Advisor and GEAR UP Lead Mentor who focus on helping students and families understand why higher education is important, how to afford college, and how to enroll. Advisors and mentors recognize that every student’s life plan varies and are professionally trained to help students meet their individual needs, whether their plan is to attend a 2-year college, 4-year university, trade-school, join the military, or embark on service or volunteer work such as religious missions. Ultimately, our goal is that students engage in post-secondary opportunities that are both meaningful and productive.
Additionally, each advisor and mentor’s aim is to help students succeed academically. GEAR UP advisors and mentors will regularly review each GEAR UP student’s grades and attendance to ensure that they are on the right track for graduation and college readiness. Our staff works closely with high school counselors and faculty to ensure that GEAR UP students obtain any additional support needed to succeed in life.
GEAR UP provides after-school tutoring at select schools to coach students on improving their study techniques and test taking strategies. Our aim with tutoring is to help students think positively about their school work, better understand their learning style, and build their confidence in their own ability to do well academically. Our tutors are current college students at Weber State University, who have been trained not only as tutors but also as mentors, and have a track record of academic success.
GEAR UP Advisors and Mentors host regular occurring workshops for GEAR UP students at each participating school. Students are strongly encouraged to attend every GEAR UP workshops hosted at their school that is tailored to their grade level. These workshops usually occur during lunchtime and cover a range of topics related to academic success and how to get into college.
GEAR UP also hosts one parent & guardian workshop per quarter at each participating school. These workshops are usually held in the evening, and are specifically tailored to the needs of GEAR UP students’ parents and guardians, and will help attendees better understand how they can support their student throughout their academic journeys. Parents & guardians are strongly encouraged to attend all workshops held each quarter for your student’s school.
