Neuroscience Masters and Doctorate Programs Nationwide

Degree: Doctorate
Students are trained in the areas of electrophysiology, molecular biology, genetics, behavior and cognitive neuroscience. There are 14 participating departments within the program. Students can choose any department and receive a PhD in neuroscience. There are also a variety of faculty research interests.

Course work and research for the doctoral program focuses upon molecular biology, developmental biology, biophysics, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuroendocrinology, neuroimmunology, cognition and behavioral neuroscience.

Program research includes: investigations of the development, anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, cognitive and behavioral processes, and the application of mathematics and computer science to understand and model neurological function.

The program investigates four levels of analysis in neuroscience: molecular, cellular systems, behavioral and cognitive. Faculty research interests include neurophysiology, neuroprosthetics, memory and perception.

This is a highly selective program with research focusing upon analysis of ion channels, receptors, and signal transduction mechanisms’ gene regulation, formation, function and plasticity of synapses; development of cerebral cortex; neural regulation of sleep; neural basis of learning and attention; and neural basis for human emotion, language, motor control and other high-level cognitive processes.

Research at GSU is most strongly centered upon the neural basis of behavior, dynamical systems, neurotherapeutics and neural circuits. Students at GSU have the opportunity to collaborate with neuroscience researchers at Emory University, Georgia Tech, Morehouse School of Medicine, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Neuroscience Program at UWM was established in 1971 and collaborates with the medical school on campus. The program features areas of research such as cellular and molecular neuroscience, developmental neuroscience, systems neuroscience and translational neuroscience.

Rush University is one of the few programs in the U.S. that offers training for disease-oriented basic neuroscience. Research areas include: europhysiology, neuroanatomy, behavioral neuroscience, neuropharmacology, neurochemistry and cell and molecular biology.

Students conduct research in different labs and have opportunities to work in a variety of neuroscience fields. Brandeis specializes in behavioral/cognitive neuroscience, cellular and molecular neuroscience, computational neuroscience and systems neuroscience (including the Sloan-Swartz Center for Theoretical Neuroscience) and developmental neuroscience.

The program focuses on molecular, cellular, developmental, systems and bio behavioral neuroscience. Community outreach retreats and attendance to national meetings is also part of the curriculum.

The program provides interdisciplinary training and research within the departments of Neuroscience, Neurology and Neurosurgery. Faculty consists of clinician scientists and neuroscientists.

This program focuses on molecular behavioral neuroscience but covers the breadth of neuroscience, including the psychological impact of human neurological conditions.
