Moving beyond the dark arts of mu opioid receptors: Targeting the opioid system for depression, cocaine addiction, and pain.
The opioid receptor system has shown promise as a target treating depression, cocaine addiction,
and pain; however, the stigma and health risks associated with mu opioid analgesics has limited the clinical utility of novel compounds. This seminar will differentiate the four opioid receptors and provide evidence of how we can target some opioid receptors for the treatment of
depression, cocaine addiction, and pain with minimal abuse liability concerns.
Dr. Hillhouse graduated from Northern Michigan University with a B.S. in Psychology (2009), and remained at NMU to complete a Masters of Science in Experimental Psychology (2011). He received a Ph.D. in Biopsychology from Virginia Commonwealth University (2014). After earning his Ph.D., he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan Medical School (2014-2016). Dr. Hillhouse was a faculty member at Weber State University (2016-2020) and is currently an Associate Professor at University of Wisconsin - Green Bay. He is a behavioral neuroscientist with research interests that are cofused on developing pharmacological treatments for mood disorders, substance abuse, and pain.
