Graduation Requirements

• Credit Hour Requirements

  To earn your Master of English degree, you must complete at least 33 semester hours of graduate work. The catalog provides a complete description of current requirements per emphasis.

• Degree Completion

  You have a maximum of six calendar years to complete your degree requirements, starting from the semester you register and begin taking classes. If you exceed this requirement, you may submit a letter of appeal to the program director to request to waive this requirement. If you fail to enroll in graduate courses for three consecutive semesters (not including summers), you must apply for readmission to the program.

• Foreign Language Requirement

  With a Bachelor of Arts degree from an accredited college or university, you automatically fulfill the language requirement to graduate with your master's in English. If you have a Bachelor of Science degree, you must show foreign language competency before graduation. You can fulfill the language requirement in one of two ways:

  Option 1: Foreign Language Coursework
  You may show foreign language competency by completing six credit hours of a foreign language with a grade of C or better. You must take all six credits in a single language and may not split them between multiple languages.

  The Department of Foreign Languages offers SPAN 1010 and SPAN 1020 online during the spring and fall semesters. Both courses will meet the foreign language requirement necessary for your degree.

  Option 2: Language Test
  Alternatively, you may show foreign language competency by passing a foreign language reading test. Please contact our program for more information.

• Grade Requirements

  To earn a master’s degree, you must complete all courses with a B- grade or higher. In addition, your overall program GPA of 3.0 or higher. Failure to maintain a 3.0 GPA or two consecutive course sessions where a grade lower than B- has been earned will result in academic probation per program policies.

• Transfer Credits/Residency Requirements

  The program director must approve transfer credit, which cannot exceed 11 credit hours. Transfer classes must be at appropriate levels and fulfill the objectives of the master’s degree at Weber State University (WSU). You cannot use courses taken to satisfy credit requirements of another degree toward a Master’s degree at WSU.

  To meet graduate residency requirements, you must complete a minimum of 2/3 of your requirements with WSU courses. All transfers are subject to program approval, and graduate credits from other institutions will be considered case-by-case.
