Preparing Business and Communities for a Postgrowth World
Friday, March 22
8:30 a.m. to Noon

Presented by:

Rob Davies, Associate Professor of Physics, Utah State University

What if our economy didn’t need to grow in order for us to thrive? It’s a question whose time has come, because economic growth will end ― soon. Basic physics shows that this is true. We are not ready for a postgrowth world ― but that’s only because we haven’t been trying. There are now available frameworks for understanding and preparing for this coming shift in the human story.

In this workshop, Davies will cover the biophysical reality of our situation, look at timelines, and explore frameworks for both businesses and communities to begin to rethink and restructure ― laying the groundwork for a postgrowth society in which ecological pressures are reduced and human wellbeing is elevated.

Who should attend: Business owners/representatives, municipal staff/representatives, ecologists, economists, activists, academics, city planners, and community members.

Designing for Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share: A Taste of Utah's Inaugural Permaculture Design Certificate
Friday, March 22
1 to 5 p.m.

Presented by:

Jake Powell, Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Extension Specialist, Utah State University
Roslynn McCann, Professor, Sustainable Communities Extension Specialist, Utah State University

Jake Powell and Roslynn McCann of Utah State University Extension will walk participants through the structure and core content of Utah’s first Intermountain West Permaculture Design Certificate. Participants will discover the course goal, objectives, and major themes in the online and in person components.

Presenters will share how they adapted the global permaculture design certificate to be Intermountain West-specific and lessons learned from teaching alongside participant feedback from the inaugural course launch. Participants will conduct a sector and zone analysis, and begin engaging in design for earth care, people care, and fair share. Last, the speakers will share permaculture resources and professional development opportunities for deeper
engagement.

Who should attend: Those interested in ecological landscapes, permaculturists, landscape architects and designers, water managers, environmental planners, and gardeners.
