Join us for a Peacebuilding Institute (PBI) with Never Again Rwanda & Weber State University.

Earn up to 12 credits in one or more participating departments.

 

 

 

What To Expect...

In this annual study abroad, students travel to Rwanda to participate in a Peacebuilding Institute (PBI) with Weber State University and Never Again Rwanda.  Weber State students and Rwandan University students will work together for an unforgettable academic experience.

Never Again Rwanda (NAR)

Never Again Rwanda (NAR) is a peacebuilding and social justice non-governmental organization, which was founded in 2002, in response to the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis. NAR was created to support young people and the population at large to become agents of positive change and to work together towards sustainable peace and development.

NAR aims to empower Rwandan youth and the community with opportunities to become active citizens through peace building and sustainable development. Other partner organizations for the internship potentially include:

Participation

A student may earn up to a maximum of 12 credits depending on which courses they take and how long they stay (1-2 summer months).  Students are allowed to mix and match courses from various departments as long as they do not duplicate work.  Weber State courses may include internships, independent studies, or study abroads in conjunction with the following departments, depending on department approval.  We have worked with the following departments to obtain student credit in previous years:

Housing

NAR and Weber State will help identify housing options during the internship.  However, costs incurred during the internship are not covered in the study abroad fees, with the exception of travel insurance.

Please note that the cost of living in Kigali is higher than many other African countries.  Housing typically ranges from 500 USD a month (shared apartments and or/hostels) to 1,500 USD a month (nice hotel rooms) depending on your personal requirements.

 

Transfer Credit

The student is responsible for determining their home university's transfer credit policy and WSU's transcript request policy.  Students who are not attending Weber State Univeristy may enroll as a non-Weber State stduent and gain university credit.

 

Application Process

  1. To apply for the Peacebuilding Institute traveling with Weber State, please contact Dr. Wolfe or Never Again Rwanda for the current application form and email it to both stephaniewolfe@weber.edu and debby@neveragainrwanda.org.

  2. All Weber State students should be aware there are several important steps to the application process. 
    Please see the Weber State Student Application Checklist to verify you are on track. If you are not a Weber State student and would like to take this trip for university credit then refer to the Non-Weber State Student Application Checklist for instructions.

  3. Application for Internship.  Students are required to submit the following to stephaniewolfe@weber.edu:
    • letter of interest
    • C.V.
    • copy of their academic transcript
    • letter of recommendation from a faculty member
    • & 1-2 writing samples ( a previous paper is acceptable)

  4. Travel to Rwanda requires purchase of a Visa.  Please find the Visa requirements for both the 30 day and 90 day requirements here!

  5. Review Health Information for Travelers to Rwanda.  In the first meeting of the semester we will discuss health information.  You are required to make a doctor's appointment that is between 4 and 6 weeks before your departure. You will then need to verify your vaccination and medical consultation with Dr. Wolfe before departure.  For students based in Utah, please see Utah Travel Clinics or call your doctor to see what your insurance will/will not cover.
