The First Year Experience (FYE) Program is designed to help incoming students make a successful transition into the university community by offering a three-credit hour, elective course called Foundations of College Success (UNIV 1105). Whether you have just graduated from high school or are coming back to school, FYE will help teach you “the ropes” at WSU and assist you in making progress toward fulfilling your educational and personal goals.
You may enroll in Foundations of College Success in two ways: 1) as part of an FYE cluster or 2) by itself, in a “stand-alone” section. See Course Offerings to see which clusters and stand-alone sections are currently being offered. If you are interested in our outdoor cluster, click here.
UNIV 1105 "Foundations of College Success" (3) Stand-alone
This course prepares students to work efficiently in the university environment. Topics include improving study and time management skills, developing interpersonal communications, making major/career selections, and understanding student responsibilities. Register online or in-person at the Registrar's Solution Center in the Student Services Center. This course is available in a standard class format as well as in-person and virtual hybrids.
Virtual Hybrids: Instruction uses both synchronous and asynchronous technology. Synchronous means students will meet at set times/days to receive instruction via videoconferencing such as Zoom. Asynchronous means instruction and assignments will also be delivered via Canvas or other technology not tied to set meeting times/days. At least 20% of course content will be asynchronous.
UNIV 1105 Clustered-Course Learning Communities (Not offered every semester)
Get off to a great start by enrolling in a cluster course! This type of class pairing allows you to take OCRE 2610 and UNIV 1105 classes with the same group of students, promoting a strong connection to the university while also allowing for built-in study groups and other essential learning opportunities for the first year experience. To register for the Outdoor Cluster, download and fill out the Outdoor Cluster form on your computer, then email to email@example.com. You may also print out either form and return it completed to the Student Success Center in room 140 of the Student Service Building.
UNIV 3170 “First-Year Experience (FYE) Mentor Leadership Seminar” (2)
This course teaches FYE Peer Mentors to effectively assist students registered for UNIV 1105. Peer Mentors learn to work with FYE students to help them transition to the university environment, to connect them with campus resources, and to provide them with social opportunities both inside and outside class.
