SDDS 2024 Creative Design Microcredential

Description:

The SDDS 2024: Creative Design microcredential celebrates your exploration and accomplishments in the diverse realm of creative design. This microcredential signifies a broad and updated skill set in the latest creative design trends and technologies. 

The Creative Design training path will guide you through creating a strong LinkedIn profile complete with LinkedIn Learning validated skills, applying principles of website design for captivating and inclusive online presence, and managing and creating videos using professional quality principles. You’ll delve into Gen AI technologies for innovative design, craft campus announcements, and learn how to create visually striking infographics. Design software tools such as Adobe InDesign, Express, and Audition are covered, as well as Microsoft tools such as PowerPoint. The series also includes an introduction to 3D printing, precision cutting with Glowforge, and applying instructional design principles to develop educational materials.

Class 1: Visualize It! Crafting Impactful Infographics with Today’s Top Tools  |  May 2 

Description: Unlock the power of data visualization at our dynamic workshop, “Visualize It!” This session will guide you through creating compelling infographics using tools such as Tableau, Illustrator, Excel, Google Sheets, and Qualtrics. Transform data into engaging stories that captivate and inform. Let your data do the talking and elevate your presentations to the next level. In person only.

Requirements: 

  1. Attend live or view recording.
  2. Create a handwritten plan for an infographic as discussed during the class. Your infographic could summarize some key takeaways from your department or a recent event hosted by your department.
  3. Create your infographic using Infogram, Adobe Express, or Canva. 
  4. Upload your infographic to the microcredential SDDS 2024: Creative Design in your Folio account.


Class 2: Find Creative Success with Adobe Express**  |  May 29 

Description: Adobe Express has seen some major improvements in the last year. We will explore the interface of Express and how to create: graphics, photos, videos, webpages, and then explore the many AI tools now available in Adobe Express. Adobe Express is a great starting tool for non-creatives and creatives alike.

Requirements: 

  1. Attend live or view recording.
  2. Create 1 webpage, 1 flier and 1 social media post using Adobe Express. These 3 pieces of content can be to advertise for your department. 
  3. Use proper design principles to make sure the content is concise and pleasing to the eye. 
  4. Link your web page and upload your flier and social media post to the microcredential SDDS 2024: Creative Design in your Folio account.

Class 3: Mastering Kaltura: Video Management and Inclusive Content Creation**  |  June 5 

Description: This beginner-intermediate class will cover the interface of Kaltura, introduce Kaltura Capture for content creation, and effective video management. Learners will learn how to appropriately tag, filter, and add descriptions for videos. Learners will also learn how to make chapters using the Kaltura video editor and how to add and edit captions to make videos more accessible.

Requirements: 

  1. Attend live virtually or view recording.
  2. Use Kaltura Capture to create a 3 minute department video. You must include video of you and also a screen capture from your computer. 
  3. After the video uploads to Kaltura, you must add a description and change it to public in the share settings. Make any needed edits in Kaltura Capture. 
  4. Link your video to the microcredential SDDS 2024: Creative Design in your Folio account.

Class 4: From Design to Reality- The Basics of 3D Printing**  |  June 13 

Description: 3D design and printing can seem daunting. This basics course will show you just how easy and manageable it can be. Come learn the basics of 3D design by using TinkerCAD to design an object. You will then learn the basics of 3D printers and print your design. Come make a creation you can display in your office for all your coworkers to see!

Requirements: 

  1. Attend live or view recording.
  2. Take a screenshot of your 3D design in the software.
  3. Take a picture of your finished 3D printed object* with your phone. 
  4. Upload both your picture and screenshot to the microcredential SDDS 2024: Creative Design in your Folio account.

*Note: If you didn't attend live, please schedule time with ittraining@weber.edu to help with the 3D printers to print your object.

Class 5: Web Design Essentials: Building Accessible Sites with SEO Mastery  |  June 19 

Description: Dive into the art of web design with our “Web Design Essentials” workshop. This session is tailored for those eager to blend aesthetics with functionality. You’ll gain expertise in creating websites that are not only visually appealing but also universally accessible and optimized for search engines. Join us to enhance your website’s user experience and search visibility.

Requirements: 

  1. Attend live virtually or view recording.
  2. Review your department websites that need upgrades. 
  3. Create a list of all needed upgrades such as the header image, other images, links to other webpages, improving the navigation, the mobile experience, and eliminating unnecessary information, etc. 
  4. Send your list of recommendations to your webpage manager or update yourself. 
  5. Upload your list of updates and why you included them and upload before and after screenshots of your webpage to the microcredential SDDS 2024: Creative Design in your Folio account.

Class 6: Basic Learning Design  |  June 25 

Description: Embark on a journey to transform the way you teach with our foundational learning design class. This course will equip you with fundamental skills in Learning Management Systems (LMS) and instructional design, enhancing your digital teaching toolkit. This course offers a blend of theory and practical insights that will empower you to create compelling educational experiences. Join us to elevate your instructional strategies and bring innovation into your classroom!

  1. Attend live or view recording.
  2. Use the learning design template provided in the workshop to create a training/learning plan that includes learning objectives and alignment to assessments and activities. 
  3. Describe how you will address best practices in adult education/training.

Class 7: Behind the Scenes: Secrets to Professional DIY Video Creation  |  June 25 

Description: This class will guide you through the essentials of creating high-quality DIY videos, focusing on the importance of good lighting to ensure clarity and visual appeal. We’ll delve into techniques for capturing high quality audio, which is just as crucial as the visuals for maintaining audience engagement. Practical filming techniques will be covered to help you produce smooth and professional-looking content. Lastly, we’ll explore how to develop engaging content that resonates with your audience, ensuring your videos are not only well-made but also compelling.

Requirements: 

  1. Attend live or view recording. 
  2. Create a 3 minute video explaining a topic for your department either in your office or by scheduling time in the DIY studio. 
  3. Use proper lighting techniques. Use professional audio recording and video recording procedures. Use screen sharing or other camera angles to supplement your explanation and content. 
  4. Upload your video to the microcredential SDDS 2024: Creative Design in your Folio account.

Class 8: Reimagine PDFs with InDesign Strategies for Interactivity  |  June 26 

Description: This advanced course will explore the lesser known Hyperlinks, Buttons and Forms, Media, and Animation panels in InDesign. Use these tools to add interactivity to your PDFs.

Requirements: 

  1. Attend live virtually or watch recording. 
  2. Use InDesign to create an interactive PDF. Include a button attached to a hyperlink, an embedded media file, and an animated graphic.

Class 9: Dynamic Displays: Crafting Powerful PowerPoint Presentations  |  June 27 

Description: This interactive workshop is tailored for PowerPoint users aiming to transform their presentations from informative to inspiring. Discover the essentials of effective design principles, infuse your slides with engaging images and multimedia, and master seamless transitions and animations that complement your content.

Requirements: 

  1. Attend live or watch recording.
  2. Create or revise a few slides of a PowerPoint presentation which demonstrates understanding of design principles, integrates relevant images and multimedia elements, and uses subtle yet purposeful transitions and animations.
  3. Upload the relevant slides of your PowerPoint to the microcredential SDDS 2024: Creative Design in your Folio account.

Class 10: Vectors and Lasers - Learn to Design for Laser Cutting with Illustrator and Glowforge  |  July 9 

Description: This class explores art creation using a Glowforge laser cutter. First, learners will learn how to create a vector drawing using Adobe Illustrator. Then they will learn how to use the Glowforge to engrave their design onto a drink coaster.

  2. Take a screenshot of your design in Adobe Illustrator.
  3. Take a picture of your finished coaster* with your phone.

Class 11: Basics of Motion Graphics With Adobe Express  |  July 10 

Description: Adding a little bit of motion to still graphics can help catch the eyes of your audience. This basics course will show how you can use Adobe Express to add simple motion to elements in your graphic designs.

Requirements: 

  1. Attend live or watch recording.
  2. Create a 1920 x 1080 motion graphic that is at least 15 seconds long and designed for ScreenCloud that advertises an event or service from your department. 
  3. Use subtle motion that doesn't over-stimulate but instead catches the attention of your audience. 
  4. Export the motion graphic as an MP4.
  5. Upload your MP4 file to the microcredential SDDS 2024: Creative Design in your Folio account.

Class 12: Improve your Podcast Through Editing  |  July 16 

Description: This advanced course focuses on tips and tricks to use Adobe Audition to improve the sound of your podcast. Learners can also expect to discover workflows to improve podcast content.

Requirements: 

  1. Attend live or watch recording.
  2. Create a 5 minute podcast episode on a topic from your department. 
  3. Use proper editing techniques to add music, an intro, an outro and any sound effects. 
  4. Clean up any issues with the podcast (reduce background noise, clean up pops, remove awkward pauses etc..) 
  5. Export your edited podcast as an MP3.
  6. Upload your MP3 file to the microcredential SDDS 2024: Creative Design in your Folio account.

Class 13: Explore Generative AI with Adobe Tools  |  August 1 

Description: Artificial Intelligence is the buzzword of 2024. Every tech company seems to be introducing some kind of AI tool to the world. Adobe is no different! This class will allow learners to explore the generative AI capabilities within Adobe Firefly, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Come play with generative AI.

Requirements: 

  1. Attend live or watch recording.
  2. Generate 3 different images using Adobe Tools:
    1. Use Adobe Firefly to generate an image. In your submission, include the prompt you used and show the different iterations to get to your final product. 
    2. Use Photoshop’s generative fill feature on an image. In your submission, include the original photo, your prompt (including different iterations), and your final product. 
    3. Use Illustrator to generate a Vector file. In your submission, include the prompt you used (including different iterations) and your final product. 
  3. Upload your images and prompts to the microcredential SDDS 2024: Creative Design in your Folio account.
