Grow Learning Communities

Weber State combined its strong focus on student success and its commitment to community to create First-Year Learning Communities. Open to first-time students, this program makes it easier for them to find a sense of belonging that fosters successful completion of their degree.

Students Studying
  • Students meet others who share the same academic interests and attend smaller classes rather than large lectures.
  • A mentor/tutor facilitates course activities and study sessions, and provides academic and transition support to students in each community.
  • Learning communities organize social activities events, or students can attend university-wide events with their community members.
  • Learning communities are available for students interested in arts and humanities, business, computer science, education, health professions, science and social science, along with an “exploratory” community.

Why This Initiative Matters

Jackson Anderson

Jackson Anderson participated in the social science learning community in 2022, then became a learning assistant for that community the following year.

“As a first-generation student, the learning community was the foundation of my success at WSU. I was able to connect with not just my professors, but professors from other departments and the university president. Because of the connections that I made then, I now hold an officer position in the Neuroscience club, and I am working on two different undergraduate research projects.”
