CANCELED: Unity Conference at Weber State to spark dialogue on censorship
Update: This event has been canceled.
OGDEN, Utah — Weber State University will host its 27th annual Unity Conference on Oct. 2–3, bringing together students, faculty, staff, and community members to participate in reflection and dialogue.
This year’s theme, “Redacted: Navigating the Complexities of Censorship,” explores the issues of information control and “the balance of transparency and security, freedom of expression, and the role of technology in both enabling and challenging censorship,” according to conference organizers.
The conference begins Oct. 2 with a screening of the documentary Banned Together, which looks at censorship and the fight to protect intellectual freedom. A student panel discussion will follow, allowing audience members to join the conversation. On Oct. 3, faculty, staff, and community voices will join a panel discussion in Room 321 at Stewart Library followed by afternoon breakout workshops.
“The Unity Conference strives to strengthen our community, foster compassion, and celebrate the unique experiences and histories that make our community vibrant,” conference organizers said. “Our mission is to increase student success and readiness for a world that demands a nuanced understanding of others.”
Censorship was selected as this year’s theme due to audience feedback and the relevance and timeliness of censorship in the digital age. The conference will address how tech both enables and simultaneously challenges censorship.
The event is free and open to the public and registration information can be found on the event website.
