School spirit shines at Weber State with Light the W, more homecoming traditions

OGDEN, Utah — Weber State University is kicking off homecoming week with events and traditions for students, alumni, and the community to join.

“Homecoming is a great way to create a sense of community and get excited about being at Weber State,” said Heather Cimino, assistant director of Student Involvement and Leadership. “This is a great school, and the more you connect and get involved on campus, the more you see that.”A smiling cheerleader raises purple pom-poms overhead during a daytime pep rally while fellow cheerleaders perform behind her.

The weeklong celebration starts with the Purple Paw Parade Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon. Wildcats and community members are invited to strut their pups through downtown Ogden and show their purple pride.

Light the W, an iconic Weber State celebration, will return on Oct. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stewart Stadium’s north parking lot. The tradition began in 1937 and has grown and evolved over the decades. Highlights of the event include a pep rally, live music, food trucks, and a countdown from the WSU Spirit Squad before the W illuminates. Guests can also create their own luminary to light the evening.

WSU Student Body President Emmett Busby said he’s excited for Casino Night, a free event for students with casino games, food, and prizes on Oct. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Shepherd Union Ballrooms.

“It’s important to have a lot of school pride so that you can better connect with the university,” Busby said. “Associating positive feelings with the university through good connections is really beneficial for your academic life. You have so many opportunities to meet new people, to make new friends, and to have a better social life and academic life.”

Busby met his best friend at Casino Night a few years ago. It remains one of his favorite homecoming activities. He’s already thinking about this year — he said he’s torn between wearing his go-to sharp tuxedo or his classic purple striped overalls — and he looks forward to the opportunity to make more friends and spread school spirit.

Weber State University Homecoming will conclude with Fan Fest, a free tailgate for all, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Stewart Stadium’s north parking lot. Attendees can enjoy free food, giveaways, games, and activities for all ages. After the tailgate, the Wildcats will take on Idaho State during the homecoming football game, 1 p.m. at Stewart Stadium. WSU students can get two free tickets on the Weber State Ticket Office website.

A full schedule of WSU Homecoming events and a football ticket discount code are available on the homecoming website.
